Causes of different types of acne?

I've been around the block a hundred times when it comes to acne. I've had it for about 8 years now, I've tried every awful chemical / medication out there, including accutane (worst mistake!). Basically, last year I suffered from the worst cystic acne that was concentrated on my cheeks. After testing I found out that I'm intolerant to eggs, gluten and dairy and my skin got much better after cutting those out. It has now been about 7 months since I fully cut those out, and I'm obviously paleo as well.

My skin continues to improve, but I still get new spots. It's not really cystic anymore, but now I have a looot more teeny tiny bumps. I've done some research into face mapping, and I rarely get acne on my forehead. It's now concentrated on my chin, jawline and cheeks.

Any thoughts about why they are small bumps? What could be causing that? I'm just wondering what specifically contributes to certain types of pimples. The cystic was clearly caused by food intolerance, so I'm thinking that the type of mine now may point to another issue. Thanks :)

Thanks Dana! I don't consume any dairy and I already work out 5 -6 days a week, so I don't think those are related. I've read about the GAPS diet so I think it's time that maybe I give it a try.

I'm female, so that makes sense. I'll look into that, thanks :)

Well for me doing a High Intensity Interval program several days a week is all it takes to keep me acne free. Something like Phil Campbell's protocol might work for you too. You could just try it for a week or two (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) or something and see if you notice any results. If you don't notice **serious** results by **1 week**, and definitely by **2** then maybe something else is causing your acne. I had acne for about 4 years though and this made all the difference for me.

Do you have any suggestions about how to tell if this is my issue, or what to do about it? I already work out 5 days a week, eat paleo like 95% of the time, and I've never been overweight or anything. At this point I don't know what else to do haha

i know of the following things that cause acne.

  1. cream of milk
  2. oily stuff foods
  3. staying awake late nights : they increase the heat in the body which causes acne to appear on the face
  4. foods that generate a lot of heat in the body - meat, eggs, etc
  5. booze to some extent

tip : prefer boiled chicken to other types

I have battled acne all my life until I hit 37. I have been doing a GAPS diet, similar to Paleo but stopped drinking a half gallon a milk each day. For me that was it. I do work out 5 days a week so I am not sure if that helps or not. I would continue to use your diet to find what other things may irritate your skin. Take something out for a couple weeks. If it does not help, go back to eating it and try something else.

I'm a 23f, primal, the only places I get breakouts are my chin and forehead. Hack my pimples?

I'm sorry you are going through this. I also went through this as a teen, into my 20's and now in my 30's it is starting to subside although I do have a few flare ups now and then. I agree that it could be hormonal, especially if you are getting acne on your jaw or back. I cut out dairy and that helped me a lot. The other thing I started using is a cleanser recommended by my dermatologist. I was using proactive and she told me to stop immediately.
She also recommended I use a over the counter moisturizer from Neutrogena. I was a little shocked but that, but after 6 months I have seen really great improvement.

I have acne, small bumps, on my jawline. It's hormonal acne. I've tried everything to get rid of mine, and have had some success with upping my fat intake.

Are you male or female? If female, acne on the jawline is usually related to hormones. Especially as you get older.

I'm pretty sure my acne was caused by insulin resistance.
