Anyone here planning to do a Whole30 soon?

Answered on August 19, 2014

I've just finished reading "It Starts with Food" (great book by the way). I thought my diet was reasonably clean, but wow am I spotting all the little bits that have crept in around the edges. So I'm looking over those little bits and going to do a Whole30 starting tonight with dinner.

Things I need to get rid of (the list will undoubtedly grow): a lot of seasoning items that I haven't been really counting - soy sauce, occasional miso, hot sauce and spice mixes (Mrs Dash you've betrayed me!) that have sugar in them. Goat cheese. Cream in coffee. Those lovely salmon burgers that I let slide despite the (gasp) canola!!! B-b-b-butter. (thank goodness for the ghee exemption)

Anyone else up for a major food fix? What do you need to get rid of?

Added: Seems like people here would be interested in doing a chat. What day/time is best for you all? I can do any evening before 10 EST.

Thanks GGMM. I'm already at five days in discovering some benefits. The most certain objectively is that my after meal congestion is gone. That's not a huge problem, but it was very annoying. Subjectively, I feel lighter, more positive about myself and even though I was in ketosis to start, my clothes feel slightly looser.

Five days in and I already know a bit. I thought I was eating reasonably clean, but I'd let a bit of dairy (goat cheese, cream, butter) and sugars in condiments creep in. And occasional restaurant food (who knows what hides in the oils and seasonings.) 5 days W30 and my after meal congestion has gone away. Not bad.

Good Morning PrimalJen and Cheryl. I am planning on another Whole 30 beginning July 1 also. I tried one back in April/May but only made it to day 19. I would start today but I will be traveling the last 8 days of June for work. I would love to be in a support group!

We all have issues Cheryl:-) I would ask why do you need Whole30, again, "just to cut out my over consumption of nuts and dark chocolate"? If that's your thing and you know it tagging it against a 30 day plan, that has an end is an interesting way to address it, again. Whatever works for the individual hey......Good luck and enjoy Paris. It's not hard to eat clean in Paris. They love meat, fat, butter and chocolate. Prepare for the bad coffee :) #crosstheborderintoitaly

I'm on day 26 of the whole30 -- non peanut larabars are allowed, but are billed as emergency food. They try to discourage going overboard with fruit (especially dried fruit and nuts -- which if course is all a larabar is!

It's great that 90/10 works for you, Lee, but for some of us with autoimmune and/or other issues, 90/10 isn't really helpful in the long-run. I'd like to do the Whole30 again - just to cut out my creeping overconsumption of nuts and dark chocolate. Other than those 2 items, I'm strict Paleo sans dairy. I'd love to be 90/10, especially when I go to Paris in a couple of months, but sadly, that's not a possibility for me.

The chat sounded like a great idea, but I also don't like video chats. It turns out that the whole30 site has a chat area. Go to http://forum.whole9life.com/topic/667-my-whole30/ Under the black bar there is a link to chat that opens up a window. We could set up a time to meet there. The support would be great.

I avoid the bread at resturaunts by telling the waiter at the very start not to bring any, I am SEVERELY (over-emphasize for morons) allergic to gluten and want to avoind any cross-contamination. Before I told them this I would always end up with crutons on salad and other stupid bread things that I don't even like that much, but when they think it will kill you they take it seriously. Also, I would be open for support emails just so we all have someone to gripe and complain to, but video chat doesnt really fit into my life at the moment. Let me know if you want to exchange emails!

I am in need of a food fix up too, we tried a whole 30 last month in my house and it did not work out. I have the occasional Braggs liquis aminos in stir fry (its much gmo-free wheat-free soy sauce), Annies organic maple BBQ sauce, protein bars, Kerrygold Dubliner, and perhaps a few too many paleo-fied desserts. I am re-reading my paleo books to reinspire myself to stay on track.

Good luck with your whole 30, I have yet to make it through the full thing, but will keep trying!

A group of us "hacks" just started a Whole30 today and we have a support group at:

Feel free to join us! The forum site is a little bare bones, but it's working for us.

Hope to see you there!

Friday was the last day of my first Whole30 -- loved it. Lost 9 lbs (very quick weight loss for me), need to buy new pants for work cause all of mine are falling off, subjectively improved performance at certain CrossFit movements (box jumps and pull ups especially -- they just feel more natural and do-able), and so on. Psychologically feel very accomplished and proud of myself for saying "no" to the 100s of temptations I faced over the last 30 days.

I've reintroduced dairy (pastured organic heavy cream) with no issues, booze... yeah it makes me bloated and logy the next day, but I will probably still indulge from time to time. May try hand made corn tortillas from my favorite Mexican place tomorrow, but other than that think I will be on the paleo straight and narrow going forward.

Good luck! It is SO worth it!

I'm starting one this Monday. I did one in May and lost 20 lbs. I fell off the wagon last week because I had several graduation parties, reunion, and other family events. I couldn't believe how great I felt on it and it has inspired me to exercise more!!!

I'm starting one when I get back from my sister-in-law's distance wedding, also known as my Boston vacation, so the 11th or 12th of July.

I plan to do a whole 30 starting July 1, and would love the support. I started one before but didn't finish due to traveling for work. I ordered "It Starts with Food" and plan to read over the next week or so, then jump in for the whole 30. I've been allowing a few things that I really shouldn't due to some stress so I think the whole 30 would be a great way to get back on track (I'm not looking to lose any weight, just feel more alert/energetic).

I'm planning on one in mid July. I've been on a low carb (less than 50 grams) diet, but day 1 of the Whole30 kicked my butt. Same thing happened on day 1 of the Gaps intro, I got really depressed. So, either my ED tendencies kicked in, or I'm really addicted to cheese and cream.

Also, and this might be advertising, but I'm trying to collect peoples menus for a new website, I would love to get a collection of Whole30 menus :). ActualMenus.com

Yes, I am planning to do another Whole 30 - probably starting July 1st. I ordered "It Starts With Food" yesterday and it should be here via Amazon Prime tomorrow afternoon. I was happy to hear that ghee had been added into the Whole30 experience! :) I am going to have a really, really hard time cutting out the macadamia nuts and dark chocolate, however. But I will do it - it's just for 30 days! Although I am going to have some issues when I start training harder on my bicycle. I'm fairly certain that Lara Bars are not Whole30 approved even if they don't contain peanuts. I'm not doing it to feel any better, I already feel pretty darn great as I'm 98% compliant but for the dark chocolate and too many nuts, I just want to drop these last nagging 8 pounds. I'm definitely up for a group "meetup" or however we want to work that aspect of it!

OK. I guess this is it. I absolutely have sucked at this in the past. But whole 30 days. I usually let cream for coffee sneak in, and I have a major problem with not drinking alcohol when a special occasion comes up (Usually about once or twice a month). Also eating bread at restaurants is a hard one for me. Would anyone be interested in a group daily meetup? We could chat for 15 mins at night on oovoo just for support/ranting. Good luck.

I know of more people who have done it 2 or more times than completed it once and have rolled on in to a better way of eating, living etc. If it didn't work the first time, or even worse, if it did but you need do it again, that means it didn't. Go figure. Personally think the 80/20 way is easier and as you come to sort food & activity then work towards a 90/10 lifestyle. That's where I'm at. Overwhelmingly I'm in a good place with 1 in every 10 meals slightly off track. I'm fine with that and its easy to live by without the fully focussed anti everything, other than approach for 30 days.

I did Whole 30 once, honestly I didn't feel much better than I already did on Paleo. I just cut out cream in coffee, butter and didn't eat as much fruit or nuts. I'd say it's only extreme if you are eating a lot of packaged stuff already, but if you're pretty clean paleo it's not much change.
