A week of average food, for a family, from different countries, notice a trend at all?

Interesting pictures of what people in different countries eat on a weekly basis.

http://www.foodmatters.tv/_webapp_482785/What_The_World_Eats_-_Shocking_Photos

This really puts things into perspective, a picture is worth a 1000 words. It really shows how big food corporations have their greedy fingers into almost every country & culture on this planet.

Is diet determined by largely uncontrollable forces like poverty, conflict and globalization? I think we are evolving into a World where individual choice, in all aspects of our lives, will be non-existant eventually.

When I was growing up in Bingen we would eat almost everything unprocessed and fresh. We had to shop almost every other day and our bread came to us in a little truck and I would run out with the money and purchase our rolls for the day. It's sad to see so much of that type of eating and shopping is pretty much gone.

Apparently that was the extended version. You can stop listening after the first minute or so, unless you want to hear about the funyuns.

The politics are obvious. They're trying to blame the meat and eggs for the family's obesity -- that's why it's front and center, and the sweets are off to the side.

I actually am shocked by the amount of soda in some of those pics... call me naive- I had no idea people drank THAT much! Even back in my soda drinking days- I'd drink a 20oz maybe once or twice a week. Yikes!

The "richer" we are, the cheaper we eat. The more poor we are, the richer we eat...... Not always the case but there is truth in it.

There's a similar series by the same photographer, which focuses on a day's worth of food for different individuals, ranging from New York models, to Chinese acrobats, Iranian bakers and Brazilian fishermen.

Honestly, I'm not sure which image is most shocking; the Namibian woman scraping by on her meagre portions of monotonous corn gruel, or the morbidly obese American surrounded by what at first glance appears to be an almost obscene abundance of foods, but which in actual fact also mainly consist of reconstituted corn, artifically manipulated and processed to contain an equal number of calories as the Namibian woman's intake.

Talk about food poverty.

I think I could go live with the Australians too. That's a HUGE amount of ground meat on that table with a fair amount of veggies and the crap is kinda off to the side.

Several of these spreads I am having trouble figuring out where the heck their protein is.

It seems like the Latin America and south Asia are kicking behind when it comes to food. Mongolia definitely looks tempting with all their meat, but its the greens(fruits/vegetables) that really stand out to me. I assume if you have those, then you have access to meat.

Im sad to see the Africans with all that grain, now I understand why my mom makes pasta and rice all the time(she's conditioned to do so) and underrates fruits.

Those people in Guatemala with the hut and shabby clothes look like they feast on the gourmet organic stuff i could barely afford from Whole Foods/Harris Teeter.

Would any of you trade lives with any of the families shown? Which ones?

Great Post!

I think what's on the table in Australia. Kinda forget about the stuff behind them...

I'm extremely disappointed in their pick for a California family. Oh, well.

Canada looks significantly better than the US or Britain, even if not Paleo.
