Developed yerba mate allergy?

I drank nativa yerba mate for years and after a hiatus I started drinking it again and was disapointed to find that it now gives me gas, stomach cramps, bloating and discomfort. How is this possible, what mechanisms might be responsible, has this happened to anyone else and HOW CAN I GO BACK! I love Yerba mate, nothing made me more productive, and I was at my leanest while drinking it daily.

You can develop immune reactions to any whole protein that makes it past the gut lining whole.  You might have had leaky gut some time ago right before the allergy started, if it is an allergy.

However, cramps, bloating and gas are not usually symptoms of allergies at all.

Rather, perhaps, your gut flora just doesn't like it and is either dying off (Herxheimer reaction) or it's somehow stimulating some bacteria to consume it and thrive, producing gas, but I'm not sure how that's possible as they'd generally want to consume fiber and sugars to do that.  Are you sweetening it by some chance?
