Is the flax seed a safer source of omega 3?

people say ALA isn't very bioavailable but doesn't it convert to omega 3 in the body? i have reservations about consuming too much fish or fish oil. there are some nasty contaminants in the oceans.

are flax seeds ok?

You don't need a lot of DHA/EPA from food, a serving of fish every once in a while is probably sufficient. Our bodies do convert ALA to DHA/EPA on an as-needed basis. The fact that the conversion is low, speaks to how little we need.

I don't know how much supplementation with ALA is really necessary. It's the plant omega-3, in just about everything. It's in our grass-fed beef, pastured pork/poultry, because they eat the plants.

Don't get hung up on low omega-6 to omega-3 ratios. I think the science done on this is suspect, simply not jiving with logic... A low ratio is good, but that's acheived not by increasing omega-3s, but actively decreasing refined omega-6s.

Beware the phytoestrogens in flax. I turned out to be sensitive to them and had uncontrolled bleeding. If you are taking large amounts of flax to try to get enough Omega 3, this may be a problem.

Some fish oil sources are tested and found to be contaminant free. A much better bet, IMHO.

I decided to start supplementing with half serving of ground chia once a day, along with fish every three days.

I also take a krill oil cap every night.
