Recumbent Bike Instead of Walking?

Hello--I am a morbidly obese (338 lb) 49 year old woman who just started Paleo three weeks ago. I've lost twelve pounds so far, and I feel so much better. My question is about fitness. Right now, I use a recumbent bike for my fitness. I try to walk for fitness, but with my abdominal weight it really hurts my lower back after only a few minutes of walking. Would using my recumbent bike for about 30 min. a day be a good replacement for my walking long distances until I am able to do the walking?

Absolutely! Listening to your body and not unintentionally hurting yourself is important, as being laid up with an injury isn't exactly helpful for anything. If walking causes back pain for you, then continue with the recumbent. As you get to the point that you have a decrease in abdominal weight, you can start walking more. Don't push yourself too hard too quickly, as that is a recipe for burnout and injury. It sounds like you're making a major lifestyle change, so be kind to yourself and take it slow!
