I just started Paleo Lifestyle I don't eat fish at all and most of my "meat" is bison/lamb/eggs. So I figure I shd really be taking some fish oil -- but 9 pills seem like a lot to me

The benefits of fish oil is still up for debate.

http://raypeat.com/articles/articles/fishoil.shtml

My personal feeling is fish oil is being pushed by the fish oil industry, just like milk industry and the rest. And I do not trust any of the fish oil manufacturers since fish oil spoils very rapidly and no one questions nor inspects fish oil processing factories.

So, I buy frozen wild mackerel every other week or so, and I eat it raw, similar to sashimi. I get the same oil, only it is not spoiled and costs probably less. As a bonus I also chump on mackerel liver.

I wouldn't recommend using the fish oil calculator since it doesn't take in to account anything about your lifestyle or health. If you have metabolic disease and need some serious help with inflammation a higher dose like 9 pills would be acceptable. However, if you are an above average healthy paleo nut like me, 1-3 grams will suffice. Keep in mind that you can't fish oil your way back to a good omega 6 to omega 3 balance, you must dial in your diet and then use the fish oil as a "supplement" to an already balanced PUFA diet. I would recommend that the fish oil is cold-pressed and antioxidant rich to avoid oxidation of the oil. I take the liquid too, more bang for your buck!

I took some when my primary source of meat was chicken, but now that it's grass-fed lamb, I don't take any at all. I'll usually eat sushi once a week, and that's mostly mackerel, so there's some there, but I skip the concentrated oil these days. Seems like such high intakes may be disadvantageous to health.

One of my favorite posts at HyperLipid:

http://high-fat-nutrition.blogspot.com/2009/12/cirrhosis-and-fish-oil.html

Best quote (my emphasis):

"As always, I have the greatest respect for Kwasniewski and I suspect the concept of liver disease being irreversible is completely specific to the context of the saturophobic modern nurtitional dogma. Waiting until your liver is a minute scrap of scarred fibrous tissue with a mass of non-functional hyperplastic nodules and is at end stage cirrhosis is a bit too late. Having a "mysterious" elevation in ALT is a good time to reach for the beef dripping.

NAFLD and NASH are candidates for reversal.

I'll kick around a few ideas about PUFA, endotoxin and cirrhosis in the next post.

Oh, and fish oil: I think some DHA is a good idea, it has lots of uses in cell membranes. Drinking it by the tablespoon is not something I would recommend! Getting 30% of your calories as fish oil is OUT. Do not do this."

I used to take 8 pills in accordance with the fish oil calculator. Nowadays, now that i'm more paleo and losing weight I take anywhere between 3 tbs to 1 teaspoon. Depends on how much fish or other food with OMEGA 3 I will be eating

I take 2 every day and drink omega 3 fortified milk (no one gets in the way of a prego and her milk!!!) and eat omega 3 fortified eggs. I up it to 3-4 when I am feeling particularly sluggish, but I usually never exceed 2 per day. thats just what has worked for me.
