Fish Oil or Cod Liver Oil

Currently I take 1 tablespoon of Carlson's cod liver oil each day. Before I buy more, I just wanted to take a survey on what everyone takes. I know I need a lot of DHA because I'm following the AI protocol. I listened to the Healthy Skeptic's podcast #2 about fish oil. He recommended 1-2 grams of DHA plus 2-3 servings of wild salmon a week. I know he recommends FCLO. However, I don't want to take the fermented cod liver since I'm avoiding all fermented foods right now.

So what do you all take?

Fish oil? Cod liver oil? Wild Salmon oil?

Also, in liquid form? or capsules?

Thanks! I'd appreciate brand names too if possible. (I was thinking about trying Garden of Life.)

& this is what i was told by Carlson; "Parts of the retinyl palmitate and cholecalciferol have both been synthetically added and directly from the cod fish for the 390mg cod liver oil and the Super 1000 cod liver oil" and "Actually, Carlson Laboratories does not measure the specific levels of an ingredient in the product(s). I can assure you there would be more of the synthetic material than the direct vitamins from the cod fish"

This is what i was told by Green Pasture; "manufacturers that are able to state the precise amount of these metabolites are using synthetic vitamins to do so. They know which metabolite they have added, so they in turn know which one to test for"

I would recommend 1 TBSP as a maintenance dose - and 2-3 TBSP if you have health issues. I would start with 2 and see how that goes.

I have no financial interests in these products and I've tried a lot of products and these have no fish burp or aftertaste. I have seen some good results with patients on these oils on standard American diet- but more amazing on Paleo/Primal! A Belgian French ophthalmologist recommended them to me and his patients when I was in clinical rotations.

Many commercial fish oil capsules have only 30-50 mg of EPA/DHA per capsule and this does nothing for anybody.

These products below are microfiltered free of any contaminants (like heavy metals), gluten-free, soy-free, no artificial colors/flavors but do have a lemon flavor. I recommend 1 g fish oil or capsules/daily for maintenance and 2-3 g/daily for those with dry eye, inflammation, heart disease/health/metabolic syndrome/(pre-)diabetic issues to my patients except those on blood thinners. The hubby and I take 1 tablespoon per day of fish or cod oil with any meal (this product must be refrigerated after opening) but can be stored without refrigeration BEFORE opening . A fattier meal is better because it will absorb better such as with egg yolks, red meat, and fish. It can be taken with a snack such as cheese or dark chocolate (make sure it is fatty), but don't take on empty stomach.

4 different options - 2 liquid and 2 capsule - all from Norway

1) For Travel - high potency fish oil capsules: Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega 2 Soft Gels = 650mg EPA & 450 mg DHA lemon flavor with NO Vit D. You can take 2 capsules twice a day or 4 capsules all at once.

2) For Travel - high potency fish oil capsules: Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega-D3 Soft Gels = 650mg EPA & 450 mg DHA lemon flavor + Vit D. You can take 2 capsules a day. You could mix and match and take 2 capsules of the Ultimate Omega (No Vit D) and 2 capsules of the Omega+D3 so you don't overdo the Vit D.

2) Carlson Lemon Flavor Cod Liver Oil if you want EPA, DHA + Vitamin A & D (I like using in fall, winter, and sometimes spring when less sunshine where I live).

3) Carlson Lemon Flavor Fish Oil same as Cod Liver Oil but has no Vitamin A or D (I like using in summer, or when it's sunnier so I get natural Vitamin D from 15-30 minutes in the sun).

If you need Vitamin D take the cod liver oil lemon, if not take the fish oil lemon.

I've taken fish oil and then the FCLO and now I am just going to rely on fish 2 or 3 times a week. I respect what Chris Kresser said about fish oil in this interview and the FCLO burns my throat on occasion (recently drastically) so I'm not comfortable with that either. I don't like to take any oil based supplements because of a potential rancidity factor. I take the FCLO from Green Pastures and I take the stuff combined with the butter oil. I understand that you are avoiding ferments, but in my opinion, if you can't take the good stuff, don't bother taking any at all. As far as I know, all other brands and types have replaced the naturally occurring vits D and A with synthetic- it's just not worth it to me. I'd focus on eating more wild salmon, sardines, etc. In Madison, WI, Seafood Center (with locations all over- even in the coops) often has salmon and flying fish eggs and whitefish livers. Perhaps you have such a resource in your area?

Hi Joshua, have you looked at frozen fish? I buy frozen wild atlantic salmon for 7.99 a pound from the supermarket, which I think is a great value. I live in the Boston area, though, not sure what prices are in your neck of the woods.

I do two tablespoons (a shotglass) of Carlsen's CLO 3x a week. Florida has tons of fish, but quite nil on fatty O3-rich fish due to the warmer waters. Since most of my "meat budget" is spent on grassfed beef co-op, I don't have much left to spend on fish and the imported fatty fish is usually in excess of $15/lbs... about 4x the cost of my beef.

On a related note..why are the A+D levels in CLO so variable? I assume that some manufacturers remove the natural vitamins and add synthetic back in, in standard amounts????

Just bought 2 brands, per 5ml: Carlsons - exactly 400iu D, and 850iu of A.. Nordic Naturals - 0-20iu of D, and 425-150iu of A - this one says the vits are naturally occuring.

Overal i think i'll choose Nordic going forward..surprisingly low on D though.

I'm taking Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil in gel forms. Got it from Costco and it's extra virgin, cold pressed, mercury free as well :) fish-oil-or-cod-liver-oil

I take Carlson's Cod Liver Oil also.....2-tsps per day. The Western A Price Foundation is a big proponent for Cod Liver Oil.

Cod liver oil and fish oil have complementing vitamins a and d. It's best to take both for proper balance.
