Is my Vitamix harming my fiber? (pulverized fiber ok?)

Answered on August 19, 2014

After listening to an www.undergroundwellness.com interview with Dr. Lustig about fructose and how terrible it is, Dr. Lustig made the point that it's ok to eat an orange (because it has fiber), but drinking orange juice is bad because the fiber has been removed.

If remove the orange peal and throw the remaining whole orange in my vitamix (super-high powered blender), it will pulverize it into a completely smooth juice (delicious!).

Question: Is it bad because it's liquid and will absorb quickly and negatively affect blood sugar and insulin,

or,

is it equivalent to eating a whole orange (with 100% of its fiber)?

Basically, is pulverized fiber the same as slightly chewed fiber?

Thanks for any comments or thoughts, Mike

You can be a fruit fiend to your hearts content as long as you are eating your fruit and not drinking it. It's all about the volume of Fructose held within the fruit, to your point about eating rather than juicing and the possibility of over-indulging. Start with this: eat your fruit, don't drink it.

Could he have been referring to store bought orange juice?

ok. this time I measured & weighted. I took one orange (7 oz). Added a cup of water and some ice so the total weight was 16oz. I vitamized into a totally smooth texture. It was two 8oz glasses using just one orange. So, one 8oz glass being 1/2 orange is way better than 4 oranges! Hence the answer!

Good answer. I just googled that point and it takes 4 oranges to make an 8oz glass of orange juice. I actually added water to my vitamixed orange to thin it out because it had the fiber and pectin.

I thought the point was that an orange juice is the equivalent of a number of oranges, thus putting a higher concentration of Fructose into your body: if you eat an orange you get a lower payload of fructose AND the benefit of the included fibre.

If you are smashing ten oranges in your vitamix you are putting into your body ten times the amount of fructose than if you simply ate one orange. Your body is not designed to eat ten oranges in one sitting...

The vitamix will do nothing harmful to the fiber. The soluble fiber is just that, soluble, and will go through as it would normally. Any insoluble fiber wasn't going to dissolve either way so breaking it up more won't hurt it.

It doesn't appear that anyone answered the question if the Vitamix is ruining the fiber. I am interested in this? Does anyone know the answer to this and have a reliable source? thank you!

think of the equivalent time it takes to drink one orange worth of juice (even if its smashed up) vs. how long it takes to eat a orange, peeling it, breaking it apart into sections, chewing etc... thus by the time you're finished you probably dont feel like another (or more). However with OJ, its much more easy to drink the equivalent more quickly and as such more room to 'over-indulge'

I think its more the fact that orange juice (even pure 100% vitamix) is much more calorie intense, if that makes sense.

but if you can limit yourself to 1 orange to juice up, then its a case of '6 of one - half a dozen of another' - im a fruit fiend though and sadly have absolutely no self control

You have the correct idea. Eat fruit whole or throw in blender.

I think the nutritional value would be about the same. I guess that with a highly blended food, since you are not chewing you are not releasing much saliva and therefore digestive enzymes. But an orange has plenty of enzymes within it so I dont think that's a big concern.

I can't answer that with any certainty, but if you ate the orange, section by section, chewing each piece so thoroughly that you were essentially swallowing liquid, it wouldn't be a whole lot different than if you'd given the orange a whirl in the Vitamix. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. I use a Vitamix to completely liquefy summertime farmers market tomatoes for the freezer, and tomatoes are technically a fruit.
