Is fiber important?

I think too much fiber is bad. For me personally, i get bloated if i eat too much fibrous fruits, veggies and nuts. Is fiber as important as the mainstream says it is. Is it necessary in high amounts?

I have no idea. If I had to guess I would say that some of your gut micobiota is not getting along with what you are eating. You need to play detective and change one or both.

Alec, I don't think we are too far apart. The key phrase is "obligate nutrient." We do get some fiber in our diets from fruits and vegetables. There is no need to add more or try to reduce it to zero. Give your body what it expects is key.

hmm I wonder some Raw Animal Foodist, who don't do fiber seem to have good intestinal flora? I really haven't looked into it, what do you think?

Agree with betamail. I peel my carrots and apples and potatoes and I'm fine. The peels wreck me hard. Also agree that fiber is overrated. If fiber were healthy, God would have put it in bacon!

I actually do okay with starchy root vegetables, gut wise. But when i eat fruits and nuts and seeds, i get a little bloated. Maybe i overeat them. I even have white rice and i do okay with it, but not fruit fiber and nuts.

Both. Mostly roughage kind. Roughage is insoluble right? I get bloated when i eat fruit or tubers with the skin on.

Fiber is not an obligate nutrient. So in that sense, no it is not important. You will live just fine without it. Your bowels will adjust to a low fiber diet if that is what you choose. It does however in fruit slow the absorption of sugars. This blunts the insulin response and it is a good thing. I guess the answer is one of your perspective.

I must disagree with John Sorrentino. Soluble fibre/resistant starch is food for intestinal bacteria. Without it, the production of SCFA's in the colon is limited and gut health compromised. I don't believe a lot is necessary (certainly dietary guidelines are too high) but for optimal health, some certainly is.

Melissa McEwen has blogged a lot about this.
