Fastest way to lose fat.

Answered on September 12, 2014
Created February 16, 2012 at 1:15 AM

Due too a binge eating history I had an episode over Christmas and the poor choices led well in January. having now got 6 weeks too drop 7-10kg, what would you do, healthy or not? Psmf, ketogenic? As a career might be riding on this what is the best bet of attack for quick results. Unhealthy or not. I am aware alot of it will be water weight but with a clean diet the water will come off in six weeks easily, Im trying to hit some of the other gunk (fat) as well.

Thanks

I agree with Mash... "strict low-carb diet or even Tim Ferris' slow-carb really does work very well".

Follow Tim's protocol faithfully and you will lose fat VERY quickly.

No nuts, no dairy!

Minimize carbs... no bread, no pasta, beer or booze!

Greens and fish, chix or meat.

When I was doing 4 Hour body "to the letter", I was losing ~1/2 per day. Stick to it, do not overdo exercise, keep it simple..no running!. Some short weight workouts but not a lot.

Eat LOTS of protein and you'll lose fat FAST!.

I'm thinking of if more as a mammalian seasonal variation thing that we've been able to get around by spending most of our time inside with the heat turned up in the winter rather than a gimmick. Some sort of cold adaptation was required by everyone who lived closer to the poles until very recently. The ice bath bit might be a bit gimmicky, but it is just an accelerated version of the process. I'm descended from a bunch of people who used to run around the Highlands in the winter in wool mini-skirts, so it seems like it would be biologically appropriate to increase my cold tolerance.

I would think the cold would just cause your body to increase its metabolism in an attempt to maintain your normal body temperature, so I could see how it would cause you to burn more calories. Still, this seems more like a gimmicky shortcut type of thing. Plus, I'd be worried that something more than just fat would freeze off.

Thanks for chiming in here Dr. K, I've been waiting to see the full story before giving this a go, but Aussiebloke here seems sufficiently motivated to try it sooner. I practiced with ice and ice water to increase pain tolerance training for childbirth. The endorphin highs are awesome, and I thought it was really invigorating, but in my mind the two sensations are intertwined, so I'm a little sheepish about getting back into the cold water just yet. That was with limbs instead of the core though, so adapting to it might be an entirely different experience, I look forward to finding out.

Tim Ferris strikes me as being a bit of a goof ball, very enthusiastic, but paints with "too broad of a brush" in my opinion. He does seem to have the hookup to cool people who are into some really innovative ideas though. Maybe have a look at some of the work NASA and Russian scientists have done with this to see if it is for you.

They do say phelps eats 12,000 calories while in heavy training to maintain bodyweight. 3-4hours in a pool could possibly do that? As read in 4 hour body so not sure how good the source.

No not the juice fast guy, not that stupid!? Just have some fitness testing and medical so I want to lean out as much as possible obviously as it is advantageous to bodyweight exercises etc. I will edit the question, first and foremost I'm well aware it will be a large amount of water but trying to see the quickest way to lose it in combination if that make's sense.

Someone posed that very question in the comments section of his blog, and his response was that the slow way it is done actually ramps up the immune system response and should actually reduce the chance of getting ill. I think the old "you'll catch your death!" line is based on observations of sudden over-cooling by people who aren't adapted to it mixed with a grain and sugar based diet, ketogenic paleo is part of the protocol. I've yet to get a cold during times of 100% abstinence from grain and sugar (and I used to catch a cold every 2-5 weeks).

Not sure anyone with a binge eating history should be doing any sort of crash diet but Lyle still gets my vote. Chicken breast morning noon and night FTW.

Silverspeed - I remember that. Barrels of canned chicken, tuna, MPI isolate powder from True Protein... it was a flavorless suckfest. I stayed on it (with weekly pizza/beer refeeds) for 3 months and lost 60lbs total. It all came back though :-(

Oh and I should add that I'm speaking from experience. I too ended caving to SAD fare during the holidays. On 8 JAN I weighed 188 and today I'm sitting at 163. So that's 25 lbs in five weeks... I wet back to strict paleo (no dairy, no fruit, no tubers) and restarted my workout plan (crossfit, long walks with the dogs, sprinting workouts, etc.) and the weight has just fallen off. But I'm under no illusion that it was all fat loss. I would say at least 75% of it was water.

Another point that Lyle touches on is an EC stack (ephedrine + caffeine) which will even further accelerate fat loss. Okay, I think this is my last comment

+1 - it's essentially just Lyle's version of a PSMF. It'll suck while you're on it, but there's really no faster way to lose fat while maintaining lean body mass.

May I ask what career field you're in that requires potentially unhealthy weightloss? 7-10 kg of fat loss in six weeks is fairly unrealistic. However, water weight is something that can be toyed with... Plus, if your binges were that bad, there's a good chance your body is retaining a ton of water right now that can be flushed by going VLC for a week or two.

I lost about 20 pounds in 6 weeks recently. Nothing too complicated to my methodology. I did weigh/measure everything and count calories to stay at a fairly low level. All paleo. I cut things like nuts and fruit. IF with two meals per day - Noon and 7PM. Lots of long walks, in the range of 4 to 8 miles per day. Three heavy kettlebell workouts per week. One long run per week (long for me, about 3 or 4 miles). And that was it. 20 pounds gone and it's still gone. Most of the weight was lost in the last 4 weeks.

Sounds as though you have a really interesting challenge with a career on the line.

Don't fail before you start by having unrealistic expectations. But one thing I do know is that a strict low-carb diet or even Tim Ferris' slow-carb really does work very well. The point is that you have to rigorously stick to it. I say jump in and give it a go, along with some simple regular body-weight exercises and I think you will do well. You could try something like the PAGG stack but I can't say for sure if it was that effective for me over and above going low-carb.

Fasting is fastest. Just drink water for the next 6 weeks and I guarantee you'll easily have lost 7-10kg. Possibly 3 times that if you have plenty to lose. Of course any diet is only as good as its compliance. However there's something to be said for keeping it simple. And if approached correctly it's not necessarily unhealthy. There's plenty of people to swear by all the other diets being advocated, and you need to decide what you can stick to, but simply to present an alternative without necessarily recommending it here goes:

I'd spend the first week cleaning up the diet, ditching the addictive foods so you can get the withdrawal out the way so lose the coffee and grains and wind back all carbs while eating really big steaks with eggs and bacon. This'll be when you can adjust your water needs as well as you'll stop retaining as much. As others have said, that's probably half your problem right there. Then stop eating. A week may be enough depending on whether you're heading for 7 or 10kg, but 2 weeks will be better. You want to end up a few of kilos below your target so you can just monitor that if you like. It's not impossible to go for 3 weeks. At the end of the fast, you're going to take at least a week with bone broths, poached eggs and small portions! A few days to get your digestion back up to speed before trying anything too challenging, and even then you're looking to eat meat. If you fasted 2 weeks then you'll probably find that the remaining 3 weeks is plenty to get back up to speed so take your time and avoid getting sick. You'll be gaining weight back as soon as you start eating so don't panic. Don't over-exert yourself during the fast, but feel free to walk as often as you can.

Almost certainly unnecessary and certainly a challenge but it's really that important and you're motivated then it's kinda hard to go wrong on the weight loss. You do need to watch out for other risks though.

Smart-ass answer: amputation.

Real answer: You might want to be a front-line guinea pig for Quilty's new cold thermogenesis protocol. Sitting in an ice cold bath apparently burns many more calories than running a marathon. The guy who did the TEDMED presentation in the citations section lost 4.8 lbs. per week (30 lbs. in 6 weeks) with cold water exposure.
