Why do I eat so much?

Hi everyone

Since I was born, I've always had a huge appetite. And I mean huge. When I was 7 years old, I could eat an adult's meal without problems. And even though I was never a very active kid, I was never fat.

Right now, I can eat, and eat, and eat, and still hardly ever get full. No matter if I eat more fat, or more carbs, it takes an enormous amount of food to fill me up (and even more now since I eat no grains).

What is wrong with me? I have friends that stop eating when their plate is still half full, and I end up finishing my meal and theirs, too. What's the reason for this? And what can I do to fix it?

Thanks in advance(:

Sorry i didn't mean to hit a nerve. I thought you said you were at a healthy weight, it was just a lighthearted comment. I would love to eat all I want and be at a healthy weight.

I take zyrtec, is there something else you take to replace zyrtec. I would be in a living hell of allergies if I stopped taking it.

Natali - why not? If your mom had them, you'd get them. My mom's gut flora was terrible - I inherited it. Thank God I am not autistic, I ought to be.

@Chris - many medical websites mention teeth grinding at night as a symptom of parasites.

Thanks! Well, I dont really think I could have parasites since I was born, but I do have a problem with low-enzyme production. (still working on that with a naturopath)

No, I'm not completely healthy yet, and my crazy hunger won't let me even complete a 30 day detox. And no, I'm not bragging, I would just like to know why I eat so much and if anyone can relate, that's all.

exactly!! If I start eating less, my body just enters some sort of hunger zone and I end up in a massive binge and with a super bloated stomach :/

Well that is actually true - I feel like I require more food to feel satisfied than I did before. But I can really distinguish a craving from hunger, because I rarely get cravings at all. I never crave a specific food, I just feel the need for food in general...

1)Yes, I'm at a healthy weight - but that's because I restrict myself. If I actually ate like my body wants too, I would be obese by now. 2) I really dont know about calories, never really counted them.

Terms like "huge" are not helpful. Have you ever written down everything you eat in a day and gotten an actual nutritional breakdown? Please tell us approximately how many calories you eat in a day.

I will add that it seems like a good thing but can be a pain really and makes dieting really hard. When I do try to diet to lose a few pounds even, my body just feels like its starving and I want to eat everything in sight, even if I am eating what should be normal sized meals.

Are you at a healthy weight and body composition? If so, then don't complain.

At 5'8, 130 lbs, I am pretty similar. I am very active but I easily out eat my also active boyfriend and my 240 lb sister. Also, when I am hungry it is a painful, ravenous like hunger while it seems that most people just feel a bit uncomfortable. Maybe some of us just have higher calorie needs?

What a great question!

I am going to be honest with you - nobody knows for sure. But here are some ideas:

  1. You have gut dysbiosis and pathogenic bacteria interferes with nutrient absorption. This signals to your brain that there are not enough nutrients.

  2. You eat foods full of nutritionally empty calories.

  3. You have parasites. Do you grind your teeth at night?

One thing for sure - it is related to your gut or gut bacteria somehow.

Just for the record - IT IS NOT IN YOUR BRAIN, IT IS IN YOUR GUT.

Love,

VB

For a start, there's nothing wrong with you.

Are you maybe confusing being full with being completely stuffed? Also you have to take into consideration cravings (especially if you've just turned paleo). It took me a while to tell the difference between cravings and actual hunger. I'd always tell people i was hungry if i wasn't completely stuffed. Also the thing with going on a diet like this (or cutting out grains(especially wheat) in general is that the food doesn't make you feel like you're about to burst and sluggish even if you eat a considerable amount.

I had an appetite like up until recently. I took myself off of 2 over the counter medicines many people take due to some other side effects. A bonus is now I am barely hungry. I was on zyrtec for allergies and prilosec for indigestion. I tapered off both over the course of a mont and that was very uncomfortable. BUT, now I don't have the side effects and my appetite has been cut probably by half.

What are you worried about?!?! If you are healthy and you are not overweight then what is the problem and is it contagious?? I have never heard anyone without weight problems complain about being able to eat and eat and eat.

If you were to have any health issues then I would be worried, as it is I have to ask... are you bragging??
