VLC Paleo and cold hands, cold feet, and brain fog

I have been on a LC to VLC diet for roughly 3 years now it took me from 245lbs to 149 lbs (6ft guy) my body weight since going 95% VLC Paleo 3 months ago has stablized at 158-160. Every since losing all of that weight my hands and feet have been cold no matter what in 90* heat or 45* cold, my hands and feet stayed cold. Not until very recently( 6 hourse ago ha) I decided to do a search in regards to ketosis and cold hands and feet and holy hell if my questions weren't answered. Now jumping back a little bit every since going VLC Paleo 20g of carbs or lower I have noticed a tremendous increase in daily cortisol, cold hands and feet as well as that constant brain fog that should have gone away within a few weeks to a month. Tonight I made some sweet potato fries by baked them in 1.5 tablespoons evoo, and a few tablespoons of butter. I'm not being irrational by thinking that the 1/2 large.sweet potato I ate has kicked my brain fog, warmed up my hands and feet to the point I am sweating in bed where as last night I was freezing cold? I can already feel my mental acuity returning is this simply all in my head? I have also noticed within these last 6 weeks my memory has turned dramatically poor are too low of carbs to blame? I workout via a 2-4 a week bootcamp class that is very high intensity... What have I been doing wrong? Similar experiences? Comments?

thank you for your replay, I eat roughly 2,000 calories a day. I think I am a carbophobe ha... I want to get as lean as possible and my trainer says I will continue to get lean but I need to add some more carbs. For breakfast today I had 1 small sweet potato with 1/3 tablespoon butter, 3 eggs in 1/2 tablespoon butter and 2 pieces of thick cut bacon all post workout. I do fast pre workout.

muscles eventually. Don't let leaness be the end all be, all. Health it top priority. and the two don't always equate. However, with the training you do and if you fuel your body properly, no low carb, low calorie bullshit and just eat real whole foods you'll get to your happy place.

Okay, well thats about my calorie intake, actually a little on the shy side and I am under 100 pounds. You need way more! For instance, 4 eggs, 6-7 strips of bacon and a large sweet potato with lots of fats.Of course you can play with those rations, less eggs, more bacon or any kind of meat, more fat, less of everything and more carbs. It all depends when you workout. This won't make you fat, because your appetite which has been suppressed will naturally gravitate to an appropriate calorie level, it may up your weight 5 lbs when you first add them in, but it will distribute itself to your

Also check for thyroid anti-bodies. My TSH FT4 FT3 RT3..all normal. Later tested my TPO, it was 626. Hashimoto's!

yup, it's common. Happened to me and many others. Typically, I believe, you have less active T3 and more reverse t3 and t4

Most doctors don't test for t3 AND Reverse t3. Verify that your doctor did. The reverse t3 is the one that usually misbehaves in low carb diets.

Yes I was starving my body... I have now stabilized at 160 or so and I am a little lean which is why I went VLC but I'm kind of over the brain fog and constant tiredness

As it has been said before, human beings can go zero carbs but is it optimal in the long run? From my experience, no. What I did was carb overload (eat strictly fruit, vegetables like sweet potato and honey, raw chocolate for the week with minimal meats, eggs or anything like my typical diet and that resolve things). Than from there I started to add my meat, eggs, poultry and fish back and settled about 35-40% carbs, the rest protein and fat. Now my hands are warm, I've gained muscle and my skin is way less dry and I am generally a way happier person. I did gain about 5 or 10 pounds but in my case that was so necessary and it helped my hormones readjust. Btw. I'm a 5'3 female. I know hearing that your weight is too low is annoying, especially when the people usually telling you are overweight themselves but even 150-160 is way too low for a 6 ft guy and that can affect hormones and thyroid. Don't be a carbaphobe and since you workout so much, you need the extra carbs. Also, what's your daily calorie intake? Being in ketosis will dramatically reduce appetite (it is basically a starvation diet) for being who are epileptic to control seizures. They would never stay on it long-term.

thyroid issues will lead to cold hands and feet. carbs are essential for t3 production.

To me it sounds like either a thyroid issue or low iron - both will give you cold extremities and constant tiredness. More likely to be the former

It could also be that the stress of VLC and a low calorie diet has knackered out your adrenals, meaning you're not producing enough cortisol

The conclusion - more carbs. Why be an extreme VLC diet if it's making you feel bad? Eat a minimum of 60g a day and then see how you feel. More on workout days

My first thought was also thyroid issues because I had the same problem until I started taking potassium iodide. I should also note that my blood tests, while I had cold hands and feet, were also normal.

My second thought is that 145 lbs for a 6 ft man seems too skinny. Are you starving your body? My hubby is about that height and looks unhealthy when he dips below 170 lbs. But maybe you have a smaller build....

Personally, I don't do that well on a LC diet. I tend to get intense cravings for sweets and brain fog. I need some carbs and white rice works best for me. I limit myself to 1/2 c of rice at lunch and dinner, half the amount suggested in The Perfect Health Diet. I also eat white and sweet potatoes, plantains, and yucca on occasion.
