How to lower body fat

Answered on August 19, 2014
Created June 24, 2011 at 12:59 AM

I have been eating Primally for about 6 weeks now, and I notice a difference but now I am looking to start dropping body fat to get down to 12 percent. What should I do in order to facilitate this drop?

I actually have not managed to get ANY of my body fat off...it is now december. I may look better, but my body fat has only dropped 1% (and that is because ive gained 7 pounds of muscle) i had the same reaction to birth control and that is why i have such a bf...i came off it in april and am still doing everything i can to find that one thing that will drop my BF down

Michelle I would love to hear about your progress, what you ended up choosing diet wise, and how the process went? Could you post an update? I am trying very hard to lower my body fat % but from mid-high 20s (stupid birth control) to around 22% is my goal. Would love to hear how you did it! Definitely cut out all the nuts, they're extremely calorically dense.

I see. I'm sure other posters can give you more detailed advice but: a) you will need to restrict calories quite severely. To get to 12% I would say expect to feel hungry quite a lot. b) You might try eating a very bland diet- don't pile on added fat and seasoning, even though that's common in the Paleo community. It's a lot harder to overeat bland, boring meat, vegetables, and potato than if you douse everything in butter. That's what I do and it's very helpful in maintaining a pretty low (though not nearly as low as 12%) body fat and controlling my calorie intake.

Ah. That makes sense. Unfortunately I can't offer good advice because, although I've had my body fat down that low, it was through an eating disorder (female athlete triad). But good luck with your goal.

Michelle - you should really check out the tags in this forum. Every question possible is here. But to start off:

Body Fat tag

Weight Loss tag

And we have a bit of an esoteric question here today that may be of interest to you: Health or Beauty

Seriously, you'll get your answer from the discussions above. Good luck! (IMO - 12% is seriously low for a woman and you may become very fatigued)

That's extremely low body fat for a female- I'm assuming you're female because of your username. Are you sure you really want 12%? Women look leaner at much higher body fat percentages than men (i.e. a man at 20% body fat would look kind of chubby, a woman would look great.) Even female figure competitors don't maintain their body fat at 10-12 percent all year round, because it's so hard to maintain.

When to consume carbs? AFTER anaerobic exercise in order to replenish muscle/liver glycogen. VLC on non workout days.
