# How many grams of fat does ketosis burn?

Created August 03, 2012 at 2:08 PM

I try to look all over the internet to find if anyone knows how much fat is being burned a day from ketosis. Many people ask about calories, but I don't care about that. Is it possible to know a range. I don't want to eat too much fat and not be able to burn my fat stores too.

I will say 250-300 grams per day.

I assume your question is actually how much fat can you burn whilst in ketosis, as ketosis doesn't burn fat. Ketones are the byproduct of breaking fatty acids down to be burned.

Take a look at the chart in this post by Ned Kock:

Okay, it's a water fast, but we can assume that after 3 days, ketosis is acheived. About 250 grams of fat is about the maximum amount of fat that will be burned daily.

Alakea,

I just posted an article that addresses essentially what you're asking. Not exactly, but should get you the info you need and are looking for.

Take a look and let me know if you have any other questions.

If your caloric needs are about 1800 cals/day and you're getting all of your energy from burning fat and one gram of fat has 9 calories. Then you'll be burning 1800/9=200g of fat. Adjust based on what you think your caloric needs are. But remember that's just a rough estimate because gauging caloric output is really hard unless you're living in a calorimeter.
