HELP! Can't stop eating

Answered on August 19, 2014

Some family just came from out of town with homemade bread, sugary foods, (all the bad stuff) and over the past 5 days I have put on a lot of weight and I just can't stop! For past 5 days I've woken every morning saying to myself "okay today you go back to no grains or sugars again for a VERY LONG TIME" (Say until Christmas, not b/c of some sad excuse of some relatives coming over) But I can't stop. It's the horrible addicting additives in the food are getting the best of me. I feel like a fat, bloated cow. Someone help me go back to paleo! I think all I have to do is conquer one day and then I'll be fine but this really sucks. It's crazy how much weight grains and sugars can make you gain. I could eat 2 lbs of meat and not gain inches the way I have these past couple days. YIKES. Advice??

I usually do fresh pressed greens with a bit of lemon, nothing with other fruit or that's high in sugar like carrots and tomato though, thats what works for me

I totally agree but the green juices I drink for some reason are very satisfying and only have 50 calories for 16 oz (which for me is a lot). And I think I get more satisfied with the green juices versus the veggies in a whole form because I can "sneak" kale in the juice and stuff and I think my body CRAVES those nutrients and that's why I find the drinks so satisfying. I can't eat kale plain and raw. So I prefer the juices. But that's just me!!

I personally don't think drinking calories is a good idea when trying to control intake. I know veggie juice isn't as bad as fruit juice but it is the fiber that is filling. If you are worried about over eating 4-5 cups of salad will fill you up and has less than 100 kcal.

I don't know what it is about the vegetable juice, but "fasting" on it until I get hungry after a horrible non paleo slip really gets me back on track!! It's like fasting but it doesn't cause ANY feelings of wanting to binge the way regular IF does. It's what's helped me!! Thanks for your support :-) Gl to you too if you ever have this problem!!

Hi DJ! I've found something that works AWESOME for me. Some have recommended IF which i think is GREAT if you have no problems with self control/binging, but like EJH mentioned for himself, fasting strikes up a vicious binge/fast cycle for me too that is almost impossible to stop. After a horrible cheat day though, I've found "fasting" with pure vegetable juice (no fruit) the entire next day until I truly feel hungry ENTIRELY resets my cravings. I don't know how but if I start my day off with/have some vegetable juice, when I do get hungry I actually have NO taste for junk food. I want meat.

Thank you Judybot and Clayton!! I've found a way to "fast" but in a little different way. and AMEN Lola haha family comes into town and there I am standing in the shadows of the kitchen stuffing homemade buttered bread in my face hoping no one will see. I'm the same as EJH where if I fast, I just get set in a horrible Binge/fast cycle. I've found what works for me is to start the next day off with pure green vegetable juice until I actually get hungry, and then I just eat meat. The veggie juice totally resets my cravings somehow, and doesn't cause me to binge like straight fasting does. yay!!

This always, without fail leads be into a vicious binge/fast cycle. Better to cut the "bad" carbs and achieve satiety on meat/starch/fat. If you can't control yourself around food now, fasting will only make it worse.

If seems family can ruin everything with their crap foods, or just the stress of being around them triggers insane binging. I've been completely grain free for months but my SIL came over last night and didn't stop talking for 8 hours straight and guess who dove into the crackers? I'm with the IF people here, STOP EATING, get it out of your system, drink a ton of water and some tea/coffee (With nothing in it). If you can't handle the IF then keep lots of protein, veg and a healthy starch around as back up.

Good luck! And after you break your fast, if you get in a snacky mood but aren't legitimately hungry, maybe sip on a cup of tea or something to keep your pie-hole preoccupied :)

My perspective -

DON'T CHEAT WITH GRAINS EVER. Plenty of sugary deliciousness that won't make you crazy and sick.

That said -

I don't think IF is the best call when you have cravings. For me it just leads to binging on junk. Fill up, over-eat on lean protein and yams. When my appetite gets thrown out of whack fat is a bad idea, I have no sense of it, it doesn't fill me up, I could eat it till I poop myself. Which I guess could solve the problem but still.

I also say, whether it be cravings like this or for the ladies when they have PMS you might as well use it. If you can't NOT over eat for a day or two hit the weights hard and make sure your body had a use for the crazy calories. 4 day bulk....

When I'm trying to get a handle on cravings after a really bad cheat, I usually do a 20/4 IF a couple days in a row with BP coffee in the late morning. Really helps me, I'll be interested to see what others have to say...

Just get rid of everything grain related in the house... If it's not there you can't eat it. Cleanse your house of temptation and then you'll have more resolve again soon
