Fat and weight loss

Answered on August 19, 2014

Hello. I just started the Paleo diet and want to lose 10 pounds. Am I eating too much fat to reach my goal? I am 35, female and 5 feet tall and am used to the SAD of low fat and calorie counting.

Example of a day's food:

Breakfast: 2 eggs cooked in 1T butter or coconut oil, 2 slices ham or chicken sausage, half a banana

Lunch: chicken breast, half an avocado (or 1T olive oil), large salad, half apple

Dinner: Chicken, fish or beef, vegetables (cooked in coconut oil or butter, or with half an avocado), half sweet potato with butter

Well, it's over a month later and you know what? I *am* wearing yoga pants. Damn it. No crotch pinch, though. You're right.

I find I feel best when I'm getting to majority of my carbs from veggies, rather than fruit. I know this isn't true for all ladies, but fruits are my number one enemy. Just like a "calorie is not a calorie", a "carb is not a carb". I wouldn't suggest eating fruits just for the sake of consuming carbs.

I, too, would cut out the fruits. I had to do the same thing, and only rarely have them (usually when dining at someone's house as they feel a fruit salad is the only dessert I can eat :p). I can't say it's helped me lose tons of weight, but I have lost a TON of bloat (I didn't know I had) and I have slimmed down considerably. Also, add a veggie to your breakfast. It's a pet-peeve of mine - I don't like when people eat only protein in the mornings! :p

When I gave up all fruit I stopped feeling hungry and felt very full on fewer calories. So drop your banana, apple and sweet potato and eat more veg and perhaps an extra egg at breakfast.

I wondered the same thing... You still need to count calories (create a deficit) to lose weight effectively. BTW check that ham and chicken sausage, mega store meats like that generally are cured with sugar, or in the case of sausage might even have corn syrup etc in it. Don't assume because it's meat, it's just "meat". Also What is in a large salad, just lettuce and a vinaigrette, or ranch, cheese etc.

Wear yoga pants. No crotch pinch. I think Brett's been sporting them since he left the NFL.

Maybe. They are relaxed cut now. No crotch pinch. As a female that's obviously very important to me.

K-- I don't know your current body composition beyond your height so ten pounds may be a lot for a 5 footer or it may not be a great change of your overall BF%.

But if you're like most of us, your desired weight loss goal corresponds to the way you want to look no matter what the bathroom scale says. You rarely hear a 300 pound guy or girl say "If I can just drop ten, I'll be set." Set for what? Those size 50 Wrangler jeans you've been eyeballing down at the K-Mart?

In your case, if you want to drop ten, lose the fruit, eat more of the other stuff you're already eating, hit the weights and do some walking every day.

You may find that you only drop five and still get the bod you want. Looking good in your clothes, feeling strong and firm, and best of all, never feeling hungry or nutty about food.

Good luck.

That looks just about perfect. If you don't see any weight loss (which is unlikely) then dropping the calories a bit would be the next step, but this looks like you should be able to lose weight very easily.

Most diets don't work for long term fat loss. They're concerned with reducing weight rather than burning excess bodyfat. They strip off vital muscle, the body's major fat burning component. When you remain at a particular bodyfat level for a long period of time, your body recognizes that as your fat setpoint. Substantial time (patience, discipline and fortitude) is required to lower your fat setpoint as you seek complete and permanent changes.

How much do you currently weigh? If you're not overweight, 10lbs is a lot on a petite person (I'm 5'1" myself) and can require quite a bit of calorie restriction. Personally, I have to drop 500 calories/day and even then it would take me weeks. And going from 1500 to 1000 is much harder than going from 3000 to 2500 sadly

What you're eating looks fine. Maybe replace the apple and banana with stone fruits or berries but I wouldn't go too low carb, IMHO it doesn't work for a lot of ladies.

Your meal plan looks great to me. I got most results weight wise when I dropped fruit for awhile. I went from 7 servings to none then gradually when my weight stabilized I've gone back to eating about the amount of fruit you eat now. Welcome to this world, Catherine. I wish you well. Eating the way you do has given me a healthy happy weight. I'm 5'6 1/2 " and went from 163 pounds size 14 to 137 size 10. It took a couple of years to stabilize and decide how good I wanted to feel, but here I am going to be 71 next week and feel about 27. Life is good!
