Celiac and Fat Digestion

I'm 27 years old and found out I had celiac disease about a month ago. I think I am having a problem digesting fat. It seems like if I eat much more than tablespoon of fat in a meal I get very nauseous for hours after. I'm not sure if this is as much a fat malabsorption issue as it seems to start in the stomach (I could be completely wrong though). I get nauseous 2 hours after eating a large amount of fat. I don't see grease in the toilet bowel after a BM.

I don't know if I should try to get used to eating more fat, I want to and I'm sick of all the sugar and carbs I have to eat to keep from weighing 70 pounds. (btw I have tried coconut oil and it makes me nauseous too) What do you think could be my problem and what should I do?

Hm yes. At the time I took them I was still eating dairy. Try the ox bile first. It's more geared toward fat anyway (as opposed to HCl, which is more general).

I found the HCL at Whole Foods, but all the brands they have have milk as an ingrediant in them. I'm avoiding milk proteins, I don't know if I should eat those. I think I have to get the Ox Bile online since they didn't have that there.

I can handle lean meat better than fatty meat yes, but it still upsets my stomach.

Are you able to eat lean protein, i.e. a chicken breast without issue?

No, you can get them both at a natural foods store, like Whole Foods. The Ox Bile may be a little harder to find, but you can ask them for it or order online (Amazon has the brand I use - Nutricology). It's pretty cheap.

Do you know where I can get ox bile or Betaine HCL? Do I have to have a prescription for those?

PS. I was 20 y/o when I found out I have celiac. I remember it was hard to learn how to eat at first!

If you are having problems digesting your fat, there are a couple of things that come to mind.

(1) You possibly lack enough stomach acid. You can take a Betaine HCl supplement to see if it helps. Please read up on it if you choose this, as it is easy to overdo and go awry. You basically add until you feel a slight burn in your stomach, and then reduce back.

(2) You may not be producing enough bile. You can take a supplement called Ox Bile to help with this. Many people who have had their gallbladder removed take ox bile to help with fat digestion.

Either of these could be confounded with your celiac, as your gut is a complex system. Personally, I would start with the Ox Bile and see if that helps. Over time as your gut heals, your body's ability to digest fat should also improve.

It means you need a lipase supplement. Lipase allows your body to split fat molecules and with celiac it is common to be deficient. I used to have this problem but I just grew out of it naturally. It's much better to find a way to absorb fat than simply avoid it since its needed for digestion and other body functions.

Hmmm... If you haven't been gluten free for very long, it will be hard to relearn to eat. It takes everyone a while to learn.

I have to eat fat (like oils) with a meal. If I take a tbsp of coconut oil, I'm sick for the day!

I am the same as you, I can tolerate avocados, coconut meat but not oil, it makes me really nauseous and feel really crappy. I just make sure I get my fat in eggs, and the things I mentioned above. I have not long been diagnosed with celiac either and I am assuming that I am just intolerant at the moment until my gut heals. I can't even eat fruit at the moment.

If fat makes you nauseous then eat lean meats, nuts, starchy vegetables, potatoes, and sweet potatoes. I always gain weight if eat nuts, starchy veggies like butternut squash, sweet potatoes, and white potatoes everyday for 3-4 days but that might be just what you need to do.

Does this happen when you eat fatty meat and avocados or just oils and concentrated sources? I have trouble digesting unnaturally concentrated fat sources like oils but have no trouble with naturally occurring fat like beef.
