How can I increase fat in my diet?

Hello,

I became Paleo this past summer after 13 years as a vegetarian and have never felt better. However, I have difficulty getting enough fat into my diet. I'm a 31 year old female. Also, I am allergic to chicken and eggs (I didn't even know it was possible to be allergic to eggs). I coat any fish or turkey breast I cook in coconut oil and eat bacon every day, but I'm still not eating enough fat.

Any suggestions (short of eating liver...never going to happen) are welcome and appreciated! Thanks.

Thanks, GiGi! I'll take your word for it re: salmon oil being delicious! ;) I do need to start eating more fatty fish, though.

That's strange considering what you described. Either way, it's a healthier approach to allocate calories toward nutritious whole foods like avocados or nuts vs. refined fats like coconut oil and even grass-fed butter. Satiety is greater as well.

Hi Travis: I track everything I eat on myfitnesspal to make sure I'm keeping my carbs low and most days am not meeting the RDV for fat. I know the RDV is bogus, especially for carbs, but I think it's a good benchmark for me to shoot for as it applies to fat. I think most days I'm high protein, low to medium fat and low carb and want to change that.

Thanks, Wuism. I found out I'm also allergic to almonds, but I've been putting walnuts on my salads and that has helped.

Why do you think you aren't getting enough fat?

Fatty fish is where I get a lot of my fat. I actually drink salmon oil too. It's delicious - ha ha! But of course you can also load up on grass-fed/finished meats that have 80 - 85% fat... And keep up with your bacon, just try and purchase pasture-raised pork as it contains far more healthy fat :) - Lamb is also a great choice too. Oh and of course, BUTTER!

Ghee on your veges, once you try it you will find it tastes soo much better than butter (well ghee or clarified butter)

Also make your own mayo!! Just do it!!

2 egg yolks 15mls lemon juice 10mls malt vinegar 200mls olive oil (use LITE!!!! or half lite and half pure, because pure is way to strong and tastes so yuckyy!)

Place all ingredients in a tallish container. Grab a stick blender (this method is best and works for me every time) and place it right at the bottom, start with a few pulses and once you see it start to form into mayo you are away. :)

Avocados, nuts, bulletproof coffee!

Maybe go for fattier cuts of meat instead of fish and turkey.

You could put the coconut oil in your tea or coffee. Or butter, but that's not necessarily paleo.

Once I discovered creamed coconut, I never had a problem getting enough fat into my diet again. ;)
