Can you become "fat adapted" instantly?

I used to eat lots of carbs, and had to eat every 2-3 hours, or I was starving.

I switched to a high fat breakfast (3 eggs (mixed with cream), two slices of cheese, and coffee substitute with tons of cream and cinnamon) and instantly found I could go for 6+ hours without being hungry. In fact, I can say I have not felt that relentless "I must eat or I will die" hunger since switching to this breakfast and going low carb.

I've also lost some weight.

Does that mean I am fat adapted? Instantly? I am happy about the change, but I would really like to know what is going on.

Your second test is closer to reality. Wake up and on an empty stomach, do some decent exercise, such as a 7 mile hike. If you feel normal energy levels, you are definitely fat-adapted

I would guess the latter, but either way, it is still a good feeling.

If you've depleted liver glycogen through multi-day carb avoidance and haven't keeled over yet, your body is relying on fatty acid oxidation to keep you chugging along. Congrats.

This more than likely doesn't have to do with fat adaption - which takes most people several weeks. However, the hunger symptoms are usually carb/insulin related. Eating excess carbs spikes your insulin, which in turn keeps you from accessing your body fat. Which makes you 'hangry' (as the kids these days are calling it).

You can tell you are fat adapted with a couple of tests. Keto sticks will tell you when you are in ketosis - the stick with turn dark purple. However, most people will see a reduction after a couple weeks - it doesn't signal that you are out of ketosis, but rather that your body has become fat adapted (and is therefore burning all of the ketones rather than peeing them out). Our you can try some simple cardio - I'm told that running up a couple flights of stairs with exhaust someone who is low carb, but not yet fat adapted - and once you are fat adapted this shouldn't really happen.

You do not become fat-adapted in a single day, but a healthy hearty protein and fat based breakfast will put you well on your way. There have been numerous studies showing eggs and veggies as far superior for curbing appetite until lunch compared to cereal, toast, oatmeal, etc.

I felt that switch the first day I had a steak for breakfast. Just all of the sudden I was good nearly until dinner. I don't know if I was technically fat adapted yet, or if I had just ingested something that digested slowly enough to keep me satisfied for much longer. Not complaining though.
