Lots of diarrhea after laxative- safe to do extended water fast?

So I'm coming off years of heavy junk food addiction that has really messed up my health, especially my digstive health. Monday I started a very pure paleo diet with grass fed beef, vegatbales, and sweet potato.

I didn't have a bowel movement for 5 days and starting feeling pain on friday.

So Saturday I had some junk food and a laxative to try and force myself to have a bowel movement, which I did...one big one yesterday afternoon, and then a very "volumous" diarrhea episode this morning.

I know diarrhea can cause electroltye disturbances and dehydration- do you think I'm safe starting a one week fast today? Or should I eat and drink today and take some supplements and start tomorrow?

If you are trying to get paristaltic action to work properly in your intestines my non-expert hunch would be that a long water fast is going to screw things up more than it would help, that ol' "use it or lose it" idea.

You could try a menu with an emphasis on well salted soups and vegetable juices (being low on electrolytes can impair the electrical signals in the gut), fatty cuts of meat, fermented foods, more varieties of starchy roots, fruit, water, and some ground psyllium seed if getting backed up is your primary concern.

Have you tried supplementing with magnesium and/or vitamin C? Might be easier on the system than commercial laxatives.

Well thank goodness you finally got it out of your system!

No, I don't think a water fast will do you a bit of good. You need to repopulate your gut with good bacteria, so take probiotics or eat fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha, etc. Don't be afraid of fruit, either. Berries are the bomb!
