Is there such a thing as too much red meat?

Answered on August 19, 2014
Created December 19, 2011 at 2:35 PM

I love red meat. I am a carnivore through and through. I do eat it every single day, and especially since I don't do fruit or sugar, there is nothing more satisfying than a fatty ribeye with grilled asparagus!

But the good stuff aside, lately I have been feeling a little toxic. I have noticed (my husband notices the most) that my breath is pretty bad, indicative of toxicidy in the stomach/digestive system. Without eating grains, drinking, or ingesting any sugar, what's the deal?

I have been contemplating doing a 3-4 day water fast next week while I am off from work, to try and cleanse my system to start fresh. Well, I welcome any comments or thoughts on this, as it has me baffled.

Try regularly flushing your sinuses with salt water. Also try gargling with hydrogen peroxide 3%. Don't eat any dairy foods or drink tea or coffee or anything with sugar or alcohol in it. I can tell you Oraltech Labs advice worked for my bad breath and I think I tried most other products on the market. Its not easy as the program has you treating all causes of bad breath just in case your suffering from any one cause and don't know it. I was happy to follow the Oraltech Labs program just to get my life back. http://www.oraltechlabs.com

I thought ketosis breath was supposed to smell like acetone. Is that right, or am I remembering wrong? Wouldn't that smell be distinct from something that smelled "toxic"?

Its ketosis, thats why your breath and pee smell. IF you do a 3-4 days water only fast, please do yourself the favor of consuming 40 grams of carbohydrate 1x per day after day 1. Your brain really does need it 40-100grams/day depending on keto-adaptation, and it beats breaking down a lb or two or three of muscle in order to provide it.

Now that you mention the acetone, my urine smells funny as well. Sorry, TMI I know, but even though I am drinking at least a gallon of water a day, and my urine is clear, it has a very acidic smell to it. VERY Stong!!!

Without digressing into the relative merits of eating carbs every few hours or feasting on meat once a day, I thought at the least people would agree that feasting every few hours was sub-optimal.

Partially fixed. If someone wants to eat a diet like this that's their business. I think it's quixotic. Cervantes describes Quixote reading so many romances that they shriveled his brain into thinking he was a knight. Reading too many paleo diet books can do the same thing.

Ketostix only detect urinary ketones, which are not strictly the same as being in ketosis. You can have one without the other. But yes it can be a good indicator.

Also, in reference to "nose to tail" I believe Bruno is referring to eating other parts of the cow, not just muscle: tongue, heart, liver, etc. Will give you more of a variety anyways!

Ketosis for sure, if you are eating loads of protein and have bad breath. Plenty of fluids, maybe replace some of the protein with fat, and add a couple carbs. "Detoxing" won't help that- you will be in ketosis for as long as you are not eating carbs, which would include a fast (no glucose source in water!).

Do you think it would be a good idea to try a water fast for a few days cycled with upping carbs for one day, then back to my regular meal plan?

Not really, unless you try upping your carbs until it goes away. That might also knock you out of ketosis, but you don't have to be in that state in order to lose weight! You might be better off eating normal carbs and IF'ing a couple days a week.

Ketosis will also cause bad breath. You have to drink a lot of water when you eat a lot of protein because of the load is places on your kidneys.

It sounds like you are dehydrated, which could be from ketosis, since it has a diuretic action. I agree that this would mean you should drink more water, but not because ketosis strains the kidneys. There is no need to try to avoid ketosis -- it's quite healthy -- just be aware of your hydration level.

By the way, I think you mean omnivore, unless you are eating only meat. ;-)

Typically, heavy reliance on fat and protein such as your steak diet is not compatible with regular eating. It doesn't fit the evolutionary framework, and it doesn't fit the science. I'm pretty sure you'll feel better with the fast, even with a day, and you may want to look at if some of your food habits are hangovers from CW carb-dominated culture. Eat more some days, and less on others. The beauty of the system is that it is designed to handle variation.

I agree with AndyM. If you're "feeling toxic" a fast followed by careful attention to what you eat may be in order. And as Ambimorph said, you may need more water. When I eat mostly meat I drink a lot more than when I have moderate carbs.

You have more choices than going back to SAD or just eating meat. You may not have your ideal mix of meat and carbs figured out yet. On a given day, just meat can be fine but for the long term some people need some carbs to keep their gut flora happy.

I adore meat, and eat a large amount every day. I also eat a moderate amount of non-starchy vegetables and at least one piece of whole fruit. In the morning I'm hungry for meat but as soon as I eat it I'm hungry for the rest.

If you're already eating things like asparagus, have another helping. Pay attention to any days that you feel better and note which vegetable, or what amount of vegetables, you ate the day before.

EDIT: And have you had your iron level checked? That's not usually a problem for women but you could be eating too much iron.

Yes. Too-much of anything is bad for you. That's what "too-much" means. Too-much is precisely the quantity which is excessive:
