Diarrhea After Fasted Workout??

Commented on July 16, 2014

During the week I train fasted at 5am and have absolutely no problems. However, when I go to the gym on the weekend at around 10am or so, I have bad diarrhea (TMI??) afterwards. It typically lasts for a few hours and...well...it sucks.

I don't do anything different and am curious if anyone has this same issue? Or if anyone knows what may be happening? Thanks!

UPDATE: I worked from home today and therefore hit the gym around 10:30am. Thanks to @TheGastronomer I tried not drinking a lot of water before and that did the trick! I used to try to drink a lot of water before thinking "The more hydration, the better". Well, I was wrong. Thanks again @TheGastronomer and thanks to everyone who responded.

It could certainly be caused by the exercise:

for some reason those extra 5 hours of fasting are making the difference.

your digestion does not seem to 'like it'. the additional water is probably not helping. if you can limit the water intake to that comparable to a weekday...that could be worth a try as well.

I just break my fast after the gym at like 6:30...my schedule doesn't allow a full 16 hour fast. But workouts aren't any different. I can try eating before but its been so long since I have ha

very weird.

what about the workouts themselves? not that any w/o should give you diarrhoea.

& as a last resort, you could experiment with eating before your weekend w/o's. what time do you normally break your fast on week days.

It's honestly all the same...shake after, shower, then meal

Well, diarrhea normally occurs when too much water is drawn into the bowels or when the body is unable to fully reabsorb all of the excess water in the bowels (specifically the colon) so, too much water + caffeine pill + exercise could very well be the cause.

I drink a lot more water BEFORE my workout since I have the time. 5am workouts only give me time for ~24oz of water before. You think that's it?

Do you drink a lot of water during your workouts? And I mean substantially more than during the other times you might take the pill.

But why doesn't it have any effect during the week?

Did you drink coffee before your workout by any chance?

I cant imagine why it would be the workout causes this problem. It's gotta be something you ate before or after.

So looking at the comments (under the other answer)...the only pre workout difference is more water intake on the weekend, correct...? (you are still working out fasted?).

What about, during & post workout, are there any differences there...ie. post w/o liquid/meal timing. post w/o liquid/meal type.
