Coconut Oil Cleanse and Autolysis

Answered on November 20, 2012

During a water fast or juice fast the body goes into autolysis. I am wondering if the same is true during a coconut oil "fast" or cleanse. I am currently doing a broth/water fast and was thinking of adding 1 to 2 tablespoons of CO every day, but I don't want autolysis to stop.

Thanks, Kania

Cocoa butter tastes pretty good....especially if you add some cocoa powder and stevia or honey. LOL J/K I do like red palm oil and may use that instead. Love the taste of it but I need to experiment some more and see if other fats raise my blood sugar as well.

Yes any pure fat source can be used :). Try ghee or pasture raised butter. I also heard of palm butter or something...not entirely sure on that. I guess another good option could be cocoa butter. Haven't personally tried it yet though.

Good to know...thank you. I did finally figure out that CO raises my blood sugar (an intolerance maybe) so that may not be a good option for fasting. Wonder if I could use butter.

Thanks...I was under the impression that the CO would be used for energy, versus stored fat.

Just something I read about what happens during a fast. I guess a little CO wouldn't hurt.

I see. You seem to also be referring to the benefits of fasting via autophagy, which many believe is due protein fasting and thus a fat fast wouldn't negate such effects. And I'm no expert in the subject of autolysis, but I wasn't aware promoting it was considered beneficial.

Well, during a fast that means the body is living on its own fat and "consuming" tumors, bacteria, etc. for energy. That's pretty much the purpose of a fast - detox. So I would not want it to stop.

Why wouldn't you want autolysis to stop?

Hi,

I didn't do it back then but just finished a 5-day CO/broth/water cleanse. I did have a small cup of coffee AM as I couldn't wean off that fast. I feel better than before.

The Jaminets believe that supplementing with coconut oil is healthful and beneficial during a fast.as long as you consume CO and no carbs and protein the processes won't be interrupted as it is depleting glycogen and protein stores. Be sure to eat a good meal after you break the fast :).

Autolysis and lipolysis wouldn't stop because you should still be in ketosis. Dr. Atkin's had a "fat fast" based on 1000 calories, 90% of which being fat, to jump start weight loss or to break a stall.

I have done a lot of water fasting and I have found that adding fats in, or breaking with broth and avocado has kept the weight loss going pretty quickly, though not as fast as pure water, but with tons more energy.
