Breaking a Three Day Water Fast?

Commented on June 16, 2015

Hello! I'm very confused about how to break the three day water fast I'm on. I've heard the more conventional idea that one should have only fruits/juices after a fast, as the digestive system starts to reboot. However, I've also heard that it would be best to have fat and protein (and low/no sugar), as that's what the body has been accustomed to consuming during the fast.

As I said, mine is only for three days, so I'm skeptical as to how much this matters, but I certainly don't wish to screw up the outcome of it, nor do I want stomach pain. Any advice?

As long as this is not done often (e.g. once a month?) I don't see this as a problem. Making this into a bigger deal than it is.

Gillian, the clear mind you experience is perhaps akin to starvation delusion. Can you not at least drink broth or smoothies? The weight loss is a delusion- it will come back. I'm not saying that you are anorexic, but this protocol seems like a recipe straight out of the waif model cookbook. It is not healthy for your brain or organs to go three days on nothing but water.

I find it helps clear my mind a bit, since I tend to rely on food for emotional support. Weight loss is also a plus :)

I just broke a three day water fast and my reccomendation would be to stay away from fruits for a few days or a week to avoid spiking your insulin, but stick to easily digestable steamed veggies with gracious amounts of grass fed butter. The butter will help to balance out the few natural sugars from those vegetables. I had some zuchinni and butternut squash today breaking my fast, and then later some smoked salmon. I feel great!

Why are you on a three-day water fast???? Are you of of food? Having a medical procedure?

Lyndsay, your comments are not helpful and show a huge lack of knowledge. Water fasting once a month for three days is very healthy, with additional one day fasts per week even better. Look at the research and do some research yourself before you critises others practices based on your own preduces and ignorance. The scientific research shows that regular fasting increases longevity, drastically decreases cancer risks, diabetes risks and pretty much every other medical risks. This isn't shown by just one or two studies, but through many, many differentand and indipendant studies.

I occasionally engage in 3-6 day water fasts, and I like to break on light tea, or diluted juice (super diluted) just to get my body prepped for calories, or bone broth, but since I almost have no appetite, the bone broth is hard to get excited about, but diluted juice tends to awaken my hunger a bit more. Well cooked vegetables with butter are great, but be mindful to be near a toilet when solids hit your system after a few days of nothing! I also like ground beef, sauerkraut, and stuff like that as the second feeding. Avocado is nice and gentle too. Have what you feel most inclined to (except nuts I would say), but keep it light, do it slowly and you should be fine.
