Anyone else get bloodshot eyes or other side effects when intermittent fasting?

Simply put, I look like I'm a little strung out at the end of a 20 hour fast. Have been on Primal for 5 weeks with 30-60 carbs on non-fasting days.

My energy is fine. I may be a little dizzy.

In addition if you don't sleep well, you'll crave food sooner

I have a friend working his way up 16/8 to 17/7 to 18/6 to 19/5 to 20/4 he's finding transitions easy only losing an hour at a time eating same # of healthy paleo calories

That's from doing 20/4 IF with strict no carbs other than green veggies even mid week it wasn't until closer to mealtime that I got uncomfortable now I skip a day and go oops, guess I get to splurge a little to get my battery recharged that's the best part once your at a maintainence level it's so easy to skip a day to make up for a bad day

I IF from my last meal of the day (6-7) until (10-11) the next day.

True - a few comments. It's much easier when body is fat adapted. So first month paleo/primal maybe not, but after a few months of lower carb and high nutrient diet it is much easier. Second, as we know the body is very adaptable and can get 'used' to longer times without food. You can start by skipping just one meal, then extend (if you want) to longer periods of time. Personally I am loving the warrior diet / lean gains model of skipping breakfast and lunch and doing nearly all of my eating in the late afternoon and evening.

I'm into the third week of a IF week on, week off cycle so I just had my first fast of my second fasting week. Am fasting dinner to dinner minus a little cream in my tea for breakfast. Am doing 2x a week - Monday and Friday as I work out Tues and Thurs at the gym. It is new and I'm only 5-6 weeks into Paleo, so my guess my body is still adapting as well. Thx.

Guilty. I need to drink more water. When I'm not working out or eating, I forget to drink. I bet this is the reason. I try to drink 3 liters of water on workout days. I'll get my water intake up to that level as well. Thx.

I would lay off the fasts for awhile. John Durant and I see a doctor that uses fasting to gauge the health of his patients. He can tell if his patients have been following a good diet for awhile by how they react to a fast. If you feel hungry or stressed out you need to go back to just eating paleo. As far as I'm concerned, fasting is an advanced technique that should be approached with caution. You need to nourish first, fast later.

Try drinking extra water (coffee, tea, etc doesn't count). The body gets a lot of its water from food so if you IF you probably need more water.

Intermittent Fasting is somewhat stressful on the body and the stress manifests itself differently for different people. Try eating at 6pm evening meal and then eat the next morning at 10am That will give you a 16 hour fast. You will eventually adapt to the longer fasts...but most people say that more time is not better in intermittent fasting. Once or twice a week is plenty.

Before I was fat adapted, it was miserable now that I am, I feel energetic, sharp and happy when I skip a day at no point do I get hungry

I should clarify, that even adapted, my extremities get cold, a little stand up and move around fixes it. Your body goes into preservation mode around the 16 hr mark, this is when i get a little cold. if you do a multiple day fast, it goes away. alternately to exercise, simply break the fast at this point.

I've never heard of this before and it hasn't happened to me. I IF usually ~16 hours at 5 days/week.

How long have you been doing IF? Perhaps IF for shorter periods of time and gradually increase the time.

I get another side effect - when I've done a slightly longer fast which includes a night near the end of the fast, I wake up early and can't get back to sleep. Normally I sleep like a log. I'm not lying in bed feeling hungry, I just can't sleep!

I've been Paleo for 18 months or more, blood shot eyes increased ever since I went Paleo. Love this way of eating because EVERY other area of my life is better.

The Blood shot eye thing is of concern to me because issues with the eyes can mean something else is going on in the body.

I drink plenty of water train hard and sleep 8 to 10 hours per night. When I don't take high potency antioxidants and minerals i feel lethargic in the afternoon and often feel like napping. When i DO take the antioxidants and minerals i do not need to nap.

Eating: grass fed meat, loads of salmon, taking omega 3 oils, organic fruit and veg, nuts, 70% + dark choc. ZERO: grains, legumes, wheat. I tried some IF which feels great - still blood shot eyes (even pre- IF).

Ever since I started my family on Paleo they have started getting blood shot eyes too.

Advice / thoughts / found any info on this? I suspect there is a mineral missing / not quite getting enough.

This is a site that has loads of people commenting (back in 2005 during Atkins days) that when they went Low Carb they suddenly started getting blood shot eyes.

I've been considering fasting for months and have tried a few times, but I always ended up hungry and so ate lunch (or whatever meal).

Yesterday I skipped breakfast and unintentionally missed lunch and didn't even realize it until several hours later when I got more tea and saw someone eating in the breakroom at work. I still wasn't hungry, so I just didn't eat until dinner. I ended up fasting (drank several mugs of tea) for about 22 hours with no trouble.

I have been eating mostly primal for about 4-5 months.

I eat only dinner except Mondays and Wednesdays when I eat nothing. I'll have coffee (mostly decaf) with heavy cream every morning and then water or green tea throughout the day. I feel fine, sleep fine, and I find weight comes off easier.
