Fanny Pack Alternatives?

Answered on August 19, 2014
Created June 15, 2012 at 1:02 AM

Okay, so I walk everyday on a trail and have not figured out how to not look like a tool, since I carry keys, mace, ipod, ID and bank card in my pockets. I look and walk all bulgy and jangly. What should I put all this crap in- a fanny pack? Fanny packs give me horrible flashbacks to Six Flags with grandma in the 80s. Are there any cool fanny packs?

Okay, today I bought a b;ack fanny-pack and an arm band pocket thingy. I swear to god, if I get one chortle, I am going to have my ID, keys, ipod, and mace, surgically implanted into my body. Thanks for all of the responses :)

This just proves that the only people who are willing to wear fanny packs are those who no one would dare make fun of.

Here's the people I know that wear fanny packs: my 5th degree taekwondo instructor, two of my cop friends, my friend who fights MMA, and my friend who's a bodybuilder who can pull a truck with his teeth.

Here's the people I know that make fun of people that wear fanny packs: my overweight tech-nerd friend (who is overweight by a good 200lbs), my 5'6 friend who's' arms couldn't withstand the force of a breeze, and my friend who wears a scarf in the summer.

I'd say this study is about as well formulated as many medical studies are, so I can conclusively say, those who wear fanny packs are way more badass than those who make fun of those wearing said fanny packs. Also...fanny packs cause cancer.

No, there are no cool fanny packs. Now cargo shorts on the other hand... :) There is also this if you're willing to shell out some cash:

I recommend a pocket belt. They're sort of like a fanny pack or utility belt but way more fashion forward..and fun to own. A simple canvas one would be a great choice for a hike but they also come in leather and can be quite fancy.

Hydration packs are great...some are really small and streamlined so you can carry your basics and stay hydrated.

I also have two lightweight patagonia bags that I use for more urban excursions. Both bags easily fit a water bottle.

get a really, really ridiculous one and wear it ironically. http://galadarling.com/images/07-08/fannypack.jpg. It works in Brooklyn. I mean, Urban Outfitters is selling them, so it must be cool.

Or carry this pic around to justify your style choices: http://eighteenandfree.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/fanny-pack1.jpeg

Anything that adds bulk to your silhouette will be unstylish. You could consider getting a sport armband (e.g. this) that's larger than your iPod, leaving room for your additional accoutrements. It'll probably also bounce around less.

I have a tiny fanny pack I have been using since the 80s. I don't care what anybody thinks. The thing is indestructible. I can stuff my Patagonia Houdini into it as well as carry most things I need. I can run with it on, too, with it in the front. But if all you have is keys, mace, ipod, ID and bank card you might be able to fit that in a "secret" wallet type of thing.

I'm picturing a massive 160GB Ipod with an otterbox case, a ring of keys that would be the envy of many a highschool janitor and one of those cans of bear spray that looks like a smallish fire-extinguisher... Or maybe not.

My Iphone and a couple of cards will easily fit into the upper-sleeve pocket of my base-layer shirt or also in the one on my softshell jacket for the colder months. When it's warm I have one of those arm-band sleeves that does the same thing and I can still see and use the touch screen through the plastic. I sometimes put my car key in there too as my running shorts often do not have pockets.

I believe they also have mace for joggers that straps onto your hand or you could get the small keychain one and kill two birds with one stone. I put my house and work keys on a detachable carabiner and leave it in the car when I hit the trail or gym so I only have to worry about a single key and thus less jingling.

So, I do know that I'm a biking nerd. :) I have a long sleeve biking jersey that is full zip, so it is like a light weight jacket.

As with most cycling tops there are three pockets in the back. The pockets are tall enough so that items don't slip out. I wear this when running or walking, and slip my wallet, keys, iphone and sometimes camera into the pockets, so I don't have to carry a bag.

Although it isn't for everyone, I find it kind of handy. When I started running, I was disappointed in the lack of pockets and decided that my biking jerseys would work just fine.

I'm a Maxpedition addict. They make lots of gear for climbing, hiking, police/fire/military. They have a few bags that might help, as well as some waistpacks (fanny has a much different definition outside the US, the first time I said "fanny pack" to a UK co-worker I think he almost threw up laughing).

You could consider one of those.

Frankly, I'm a married 34-year-old man, and really could give a crap how I look when exercising.

People can conceal a full size handgun under a tshirt.

What's wrong with a North Face bookbag? Or try Lumber Pack. It's like a fanny pack for the rugged.
