How can Gary Taubes improve his online presence?

He's probably referenced on this site more than any individual yet he's only had an online presence for 3 months!

  • Should he tweet more @garytaubes? What should he tweet about?
  • Create a Facebook page for himself instead of his book https://www.facebook.com/whywegetfat?
  • Write more and smaller blog posts? What topics are interesting?
  • Comment on other people's blogs? Do interviews with other bloggers?

What other advice would you give him?

Quote for the truth. Plus I think we have enough bloggers. Add PaleoHacks plus podcasts and my "paleo rabbit knowledge hole" is deep enough.

I wouldn't give him any advice. He's done fine for himself and he's doing what he wants. If he doesn't want a more of an online presence that just leaves the field open for someone else.

Edited to add: Also, while Taubes certainly has a very respectable science background, as the public face of Paleo (which he isn't anyway) or low carb or good sat fats, he's not going to win over people going against the likes of celebrity MDs like Dr. Oz with an MS.

If you want Taubes to increase his presence because you're looking for an articulate public spokesperson, I think you're better served finding an articulate, charismatic physician, preferably one with a Ph.D. too. Put someone with the credentials that matter to the lay public against the face of conventional wisdom and you might have a fighting chance.

Yes Kurt Harris is very good to read online, but Taubes has always impressed me by how calm he seems as a speaker even when the panel he's on is attacking him and making really erroneous statements about the lipid hypothesis, diet etc.

I really don't see Kurt Harris being that calm in the face of bad science. (my opinion) On his blog he seems impatient and slightly angry with questions and comments he doesn't agree with. I'm a little afraid to say this b/c he comes on here and he might get mad at me:) I'm glad both of their voices are out there though.

Unless you're his agent, I wouldn't worry about it. I suspect he cares more about the integrity of his writing, and expects that to carry his reputation far into the future, than a media presence to increase his short-term sales.

It's really sad, that someone has to play Lady Gaga to be noticed. His knowledge and books should be enough. Ideas should be enough of a PR.

Seems irrelevant to Paleo or his authority on any subjects.

I don't think he needs more of an online presence. The controversy alone, such as his appearance on Dr. Oz, will get him where he needs to be.

I agree, he has done enough and his books should be read not learned about online. Let him be.

If your looking for an MD with an online presence maybe you should checkout Kurt G. Harris MD blog http://www.paleonu.com/

It's one of the most intelligent and well presented/informed sources of information re the Paleo movement.
