Groking the 9-5 office

Howdy folks:

I'm a 9-5er and wanted to get other ideas on ways to keep active in an office environment.

Here's a few of mine:

  • Run to the top floor of your building each time you're coming back up the stairs (easier for some)
  • Inclined pushups (using steps) and/or dips (if you have stair railings)
  • Ab squeeze (sucking in stomach and holding for a minute or so) every 20 mins or so
  • Stretches, I have an aeron chair which allows me to do pretty much full back extensions (love that thing!)
  • Offer to carry heavy things... always (an office move 5 months ago was a dream :P)
  • Can't leave to get out and about for lunch? Stand.

Looking forward to some originals

Sorry - didn't mean to imply Google did that. I mean you can use Google for office olympics ideas. I've never worked for Google.

My favourite has always been "greasing the wheel" and dropping to my old office floor and doing 10 pushups as many times a day as I could. Also air squats during conference calls.

Thanks Mike. Love the idea of walking meetings a la 'Steve Jobs'. And the office olympics thing sounds awesome. Never knew Google did that. That's why they're no. 1 I guess.

And of course you can Google office olympics. Lots of great ideas depending on your work environment. I worked for a small start-up out of college. It was great...

I walk to a different bathroom in the building every time I have to go. I pee in the first, fix my tie in the second, and get a sip from the water fountain by the third. I drink a lot of water so I this pretty often throughout the day.

Same issue here. I use a balance ball instead of a chair. I've advocated to the director of the company that anyone who doesn't have adverse issues with their back should use them. Sitting on that all day has really strengthened my core. I also do dips at my desk, maybe sets of 25-30 a few times a day. It used to get me strange looks, not anymore. In fact, others have followed suit. Finally, I drink plenty of water and get up at least 3-4 times a day to walk around and use the restroom. Breaks up the day and keeps blood flowing. Other things like stretching, a standing workstation (if you can arrange it) or taking a walk during lunch or breaks can also work.

Push ups and squats and lunges in the bathroom.

Take the stairs not the elevator.

Do calf raises at your desk.

Get up and walk around at least once an hour.

Use a stability ball instead of a chair.

Tighten your quads while you sit.

Do chair push ups.

Park farther away in the parking lot.

Walk during lunch or during breaks.

Great question. I like your list. I might add walking meetings. If it's a small (preferably informal) group meeting, do it while walking the halls and/or around the building instead of in a conference room. Not ideal if you have a lot of materials to present, but can work with printouts. Of course the same can be done for phone calls with a cell phone.
