estrogen dominance from high saturated fat

I'm male, 61, 5'8". 137lbs., exercise regularly (aerobics and weights), high sex drive, no symptoms of estrogen dominance except for BPH symptoms which are getting worse and not improving with saw palmetto. I eat a mostly paleo type diet with lots of saturated fat. I read that high saturated fat causes estrogen dominance and I would normally dismiss this as party-line, conventional, phobic nonsense except I'm now wondering about it due to the pronounced BPH symptoms. Could there be any truth to a diet high in saturated fat causing estrogen dominance?

Exactly -- that's why his weight is even more striking at that height.

He's also male and you are female. Just check a female/male with the "same" size (BMI) and you will see a big difference!

I eat only grass fed beef and dairy. I render pork fat for the cracklings but give the lard away...it's not feedlot pork but most hogs get some grain.

Re: rBST: 1) increased production in dairy cattle actually result in lower rBST concentration in milk. 2) rBST is not used in beef cattle (as far as I've seen). 3) rBST is so reviled, I've not seen milk not labeled rBST-free.

@Aisling, exogenous hormones are greatly outnumbered by endogenous hormone production.

Do the fats you eat come from conventional beef or dairy? Feedlot beef and conventional dairy that comes from rBST injected cows does contain higher levels of estrogen and I have no doubt that could cause a problem.

Overweight people are particularly prone to estrogen dominance. Fat cells (adipose tissues) produce a weak form of estrogen (estrone). People in developed countries have more estrogen dominance because they eat more food contaminated with xenoestrogens than their Third World counterparts. Estrogen dominance is often a disease of wealth. Many women in perimenopause, which usually occurs from about age 35 to 50, are deficient in progesterone because they ovulate less frequently. They have lower levels of estrogen than young women, but are technically estrogen dominant because of the progesterone deficiency. Their hormones are unbalanced as they head towards menopause and the end of childbearing, which happens in most women from age 51 to 60.

Xenoestrogens and estrogens from plant sources are a non issue.  Animal versions of estrogen, and there are a few estrone and estradoil are well known, as well as their sulfated forms, are highly present in commercial diary products, due to fertility treatments and the practise of milking cows during pregnancy.  These bioidentical animal versions of estrogen are many times more powerful than any plant versions.  Progesterone is also found in high quantities in commercial dairy.  Unbalanced hormones is just an overused line to justify the use of hormone replacements therapies.  The best way to normalise hormone levels in the body is simply to remove commercial dairy.  It's the most significant source of hormones in the diet.  It does not matter if it's China, India, Europe, South Africa, USA, NZ, Australia, commercial dairy is the same.  It's nothing to do with Western diet, it's just commercial dairy.  50 years ago, there was little obesity in Western countries.

Selenium happens to be good for the prostate.

Saturated fat is not a problem, especially when considering what else, exactly, would you be eating instead?

I have heard that the lignans in flax seed bind with and neutralize estrogen.

Look into supplementing Calcium D-Glucarate to detox the estrogen from your liver and stabilize your testosterone.

I'm a woman but have only been taking it two months and just came back from the doctor with amazing lab results from adding it to my daily regimen. My estrogen and testosterone levels were perfect for the first time in forever.

There's a lot of evidence that it works well on prostate health, Google it. I found this in a quick search which might help shed some light on it as well. Glucarate Report link

Yes there is truth to that. Fat cell are said to convert testosterone to estorgen but it would have to be more fat than you have. If you have BPH you need to look for other solutions with a doctor. According to Super Beta Prostate reviews that I've read Saw Palmetto isn't much better than a placebo. I's suggest switching it out for something like Super Beta Prostate that contains more beta-sitosterol.

When eating a paleo diet there is much to consider before looking at the meat. How long have you been eating paleo. If you have been eating the same way for at least a year and have been performing very well up until lately then it shows that something has either been sneaking up on you or there is some sort of deficiency some where. What is your blood type. Do you consume lots of carbs or is fat your main source of energy. Can you give a little more insight as to what you eat.

I don't think a high sat fat diet on its own would be enough to cause BPH as an outgrowth of estrogen dominance. Maybe it could exacerbate an existing imbalance, but I don't think it would straight-up cause one.

At 137 on an adult male frame of 5'8", you run pretty light. Maybe there's something else going on there...

(I'm 5'2" and only a few pounds lower than you. But then again, maybe that means you're just right and I'm a fatty! I think as a society, we've lost our ability to judge what a "normal"/healthy body size is, so I might be speaking out of turn.) :-/
