Can't eat meat other than chicken or fish

My wife can not eat beef or pork. She claims it has been that way since she was a baby. She gets sick to the stomach and will vomit for hours. I've seen it first hand when she has accidentally eaten something that has pork or beef. She knows instantly.

We don't think it is an allergy as she can eat beef gravy/broth that is strained, and none of the symptoms involve skin irritation or allergic type reactions. She says that her body does not produce the enzymes required to eat beef or pork which seems odd. She hovers over bacon almost drooling because she has never had it (other than by accident) and she loves the smell of steak.

I think she would enjoy both beef and pork if she could eat it. Has anyone heard of any disorder specific to these symptoms?

Dude, you're wrong. I know a guy just like this. This is real. I don't know what the cure is. Wish I did.

Placebo has really powerful physiological affects- I believe that is what Matt was referring to, that it isn't just some silly thing in your head that you make up, it causes real, physical symptoms (like vomiting, fainting, hives etc). So the physical reaction doesn't mean that it wasn't a placebo.

That's what I thought. If you do not believe me, I can ask one of those people (actually two of them - I still have their emails - to respond to you). When I heard about it - I thought it was not possible. But as a teacher I have encountered people with the weirdest allergies. I had one kid who was allergic to carrots. CARROTS out of all things! Still cannot figure it out.

The people I know - it is definitely not in their head. I have witnessed it when they told us it was lamb but it was beef and my colleague knew it was not right away. He felt it immediately. I was always wondering what it was.

I know a couple of people who are allergic to meat--one to beef and one to pork. They get violently ill within minutes. I hate to do this, but sorry. Downvoted. People who react like this to others' allergies and sensitivities are the reason many people with allergies don't go out to eat. Too nervous about people not taking them seriously.

Unfortunately I don't have the merit badges yet to down grade people, because otherwise I would have down graded you, Bill1102inf, on this comment. Discounting people's experience shows a lack of wisdom. Even suggesting that it is placebo is better than your comment. Starving people invented agricultural grains: Starving people are the standard of what is paleo or healthy.

You can easily test to see if it is the lack of enzymes by giving her pancreatin supplement or, like VB said above, papaya. Try just the littlest piece of beef along with a large glass of papaya juice. That would test the lack of enzyme theory. Spiritually speaking, beef is very heavy and chicken is very light. Perhaps it is a spiritual insight deep in her mind, in which case it would not be a bad thing but a good thing. I never eat heavy stuff, spiritually speaking, and I never eat anything that I could love and feel affection for.

Agreed! I'm a strictly pescatarian paleo-person, and it can be very satisfying if you mix it up.

Semantics. Some people's systems react poorly to beef and pork, call it what you may. I'm not "allergic" per say to land-animal meat, but if I eat it, my rheumatoid arthritis flares up. Fish is where it's at.

Is she a Hypersensitive celiac? I know a few who cannot eat any grain fed meat! What the meat eats matters!!! GMO Corn and Soy fed beef from CAFO feeding farms are horrible. Has she ever had meat from a grass fed and finished cow?

I know three people like that. When the first girl told me about it, I did not believe her. But then other people told me about it too. One girl told me she would spit it out as a baby. I have a question though - does she have the same reaction to grass fed lamb as well? Just interesting. Also, has she tried digestive enzymes? I know it is a supplement, but I was just wondering. If she does not want to try enzymes, papaya supposed to aide meat digestion.

Is there an issue about only being able to eat seafood/poultry? Chicken, duck, turkey, halibut, oysters, mussels, squid, octopus, scallops, shrimp, prawns, salmon, tuna, cod, clams, smoked, baked, barbequed, broiled, sauced, stewed.... all very paleo and very healthy. She could happily eat a huge variety of seafood and poultry for years and never get bored, there's just an enormous variety! If you guys don't want to deal with the trouble of figuring this out, just commit to a huge selection of seafood and poultry, it's a very healthy way to live!

While I do think your wife should get some testing done (and there's no way to know how much of the vomiting is due to the placebo) for general allergies and sensitivities, the fact that she can eat gravy does point to the fact that it is a possibility that it is more of a physical response due to a psychological expectancy of sickness. It would be nice to know, after a discussion with a GP and possibly a naturopath (ask for recommendations to make sure you get a good one!), if there is an issue there with sensitivities and digestion, but if there isn't it would at least put to rest the possibility, know what I mean?

It could be in her head. One (or a few) bad experience with a certain food can cause such a problem. I, for example, couldn't eat eggs from a carton for the longest time without serious digestive upset. It was all in my head after getting sick from dorm room eggs one too many times. Mind over matter is very real - placebo, nocebo, etc...

Being bit by the Lone Star Tick can cause allergies to beef and pork.

She gets sick?? Someone knows 3 people like this??? Your all making me sick, because I am telling you right now that it is IMPOSSIBLE to not be able to digest BEEF or PORK. Thats right, there are NO ALLERGIES to beef, or pork, whatsoever. Try starving them for a month, Ill bet they will eat beef like a zombie eating brains.
