Do you remove the white chalazae from your eggs?

It looks nasty, like a big booger. My mom always thought it was disgusting, and she influenced me in this way. She used to make this face of disgust when she explained why she would take them out. Plus she said one time she had homemade ice cream and the people who made it didn't take them out and she felt something in her mouth like a big snot wad. She spit it out and it was the chalazae!! lol

Funny though... if you click on the link and watch the short video, you can see right away that it didn't actually work and they cut the camera. Watch closely at the 10 second mark. The little tool didn't grab it! WTF? How did that pass as a good demonstrational video!

So what do you all think. Do you just eat them or do you take them out? Is there a nutritional reason to do one or the other? Like maybe it has a big effect on your small, dense LDL? (kidding)

My boyfriend doesn't like gristle or tendons (or silverskin). One bite of it and he's done eating. Chicken breasts become chicken bites by the time I'm done dissecting it! Needless to say, lots of ground beef and ground poultry at my house :). Oh, as far as the BSW, I bake a lot for other people and always remove it when making brownies. I can leave it in for all the rest of my baking, but it gets rubbery in brownies.

nah. all chicken eggs have about the same when it comes to that. i don't think pastured vs conventional makes much of a diff.

if you take the whole thing (yoke) in your mouth and suck on it, the warm fluid explodes in your mouth and runs down the back of your throat; very sexy!

I just eat them as they come. Weird tho, I very rarely see the boogersnotwad trail of fear and horror in my eggs and I typically get pastured. Hmm.. I wonder if all the different egg varieties have varying levels of BSW?

It's a very fine line lol I absolutely want the yolk runny but no runny white stuff! When I was a kid if my mom broke the yolk of my egg I wouldn't eat it and she would make me a new one... how horrible is that!

oh you have no idea. my mom had major phsychological food issues. if the texture of something, or the thought behind something grossed her out, it was game over. I don't think she did it on purpose at all, but it definitely influenced us kids. Slowly but surely, I've been able to overcome most of it.

Runny/liquid yellows are the BEST! I consider my fried egg 'ruined' and don't even want it anymore if I cook the yellow on accident!

runny whites are inedible, IMHO. i gag thinking about it. but yolks? give em to me liquid.

OMG yes... my grandma used to do this, passed it on to my mom, who passed it onto me by telling me they were "chicken fetuses." I try not to think about them in hard boiled eggs but fish them out in everything else. I didn't know it was just the "anchor" for the yolk, though... I always thought they were tiny little chickens! Maybe I won't be so anal about it anymore...

I don't remove them, I don't even think about them. To me they are just a part of the egg.

I'll take it out IF I'm making hollandaise sauce AND it looks big AND it doesn't give me too much grief in removing it.

Otherwise, I just don't care enough about it.

I've had one show up in a flourless molten chocolate cake and it was nowhere near boogery - it was just like a tiny little piece of egg white that somehow resisted scrambling/whisking into the rest of the batter. It didn't bother me at all to eat it.

In Swedish that gross slimy part is called the slingris (at least that's how it's pronounced). My mom had a real complex about them when she was a kid, but thankfully I was spared and am able to blithely ignore the buggers. It's one of the few Swedish words my mom taught me, though!

I usually scramble our eggs, and use an electric mixer. When I am done mixing, I can see all the little boogers on the beaters when I eject them. That is my removal tool. But if I am frying them or baking them I do not bother to remove.

I never thought to remove them. I can see myself at 7am with a sharp knife wasting 5 minutes chasing this squirrely little egg string deal around in my pan, and the idea does not appeal. I just cook and eat! (I must have runny yolks in my fried eggs!) They are just part of the egg and don't bother me. This coming from someone who is still horrified by gristle in meat. If I chomp down on gristle my entire body coils up! UGH!!! I dissect steaks like a surgeon. Fifteen years of meatlessness does this to you.

Yeah it never occurred to me that you should take that piece out, I only see it when you first crack the egg in the pan. I only eat my eggs either scrambled or "over medium" because I do not dig runny eggs. When I was a kid if you would cut into the white and it was kind of slimy and opaque my father would call that chicken snot and it really grossed me out!

I take it out if we're eating sunny-side-up eggs or if I'm making meringue (easy to take it out using the shell - just takes a steady hand and a little patience - sometimes those suckers are hard to get off)

If we're scrambling or making a frittata or other reecipes using eggs I don't bother because once they're cookd you can't find them.

As for the nutritional info - who knows!

WOW - isn't there a saying that kids are born perfect and it takes 18 years for their parents to mess them up? :)

We learnt in school all about what an egg is composed of and they've never bothered me, I've never even really noticed them.

I had no idea it had a name. Sometimes it bothers me but not enough to chase it around for several minutes. Plus sometimes when you remove it that breaks the yolk...and unless I am making scrambled eggs my egg yolks need to be intact and runny! I do not believe there is any extra nutritional value to it. Its just a band that keeps the yolk attached to the shell.

You learn something new everyday. I eat a lot of eggs and have never ever noticed it...Of course when I am cracking them open I try not to think about them too much, raw eggs make me gag. I guess I eat them all the time and never have had a problem...not dead yet, so it is all good. :D

the Tidee Egg tool shown on the video did remove the shell easily and does remove the chalazae. I have one and keep it by the stove and have used it for two years.

Not sure what the writer who said it didn't work was talking about!
