How Can We Be of Service to the Paleo Community?

Answered on August 19, 2014
Created June 08, 2011 at 11:14 PM

Somebody once said, "Ask not what your Paleo can do for you, but what you can do for your Paleo." I forget who said that. Maybe it was Mark Sisson. I don't know. One of those guys.

Anyway, I have heard the call and am ready to pick-up that sledge hammer and run with it. I want to give back to the community. We're "all in this together". Will you answer that call? You should. Tell us what you intend to do. Here are some of my plans:

Go on the Jimmy Moore Show. A lot of people watch that show, right?! Jimmy and I might not know much, but we know how we feel, dammit! You guys don't understand. Me and Jimmy are both Southerners. We can act all high falutin' and Paleo, but we both grew up eating corn pone and greens cooked with hamhock. We could tear us up a bottle of some "Jack", if it weren't for the carbs and all. What I'm trying to say is that Jimmy and I know how to rouse the troops. I still don't know why he calls his show, "Livin La Vida Low-Carb." Sounds Canadian.

Tour the Country By Bus. We could call it the Paleo Express We don't need a fancy name, like the Merry Pranksters or the Partridge Family. We would visit mostly small towns. You know, the kind nobody else wants to go to. I don't know what I'd talk about. Does it really matter? It's not like I read books or nothing. Heck, I hate intellectuals, like that Katie Couric. I may not have a lot of big ideas, but, like I said, at least I know how I feel about things. And if you don't feel the same way as me, well, you're just wrong.

Set Up Education Booths at Supermarkets. Gonna stick little pieces of coconut oil and Kerry Gold butter on toothpicks and give them out as free samples. That should reel them in.

Agit-Prop in Front of Fruit Stands. My cri de guerre will be "Hands off Fructose."

Start a Blog. Listen, I may not be smart. I am not pretty either. Don't have much of a personality. Well, none at all really. In fact, I have a pungent body odor and kids throw rocks at me. Look, I deserve respekt, too. So I am going to do what every other stupid, unattractive slob who wants admiration and attention but can't seem to get it in the real word does...I am going to start my very own blog! Yep, gonna be an authority, gonna have people quoting me in the blogosphere, "But Thomas says....".

Thanks Rose. Given where I came from and where I stand today I feel almost no choice in the matter of giving back. Yes I have worked hard but I worked hard for the 10 years prior and came up empty handed. A lot of my success has been dumb luck which was mostly crossing paths with the right people and the right ideas at the right time. I feel just damn lucky and want to try to pay that back. Lord knows (as do you!) I have NO patience but I'm working on it, lol.

But from what I've seen in the last several years, many people really do seem to need a lot of encouragement and support to change the way they eat. There seem to be all kinds of social and emotional undertones to eating that make successfully going it alone is more the exception than the rule. Good for you, and for your mentees. <3

If we tour the country by bus, must we have matching outfits? That would be the deal breaker for me. I really want to play lead guitar too. I make my guitar strings out of real gut, none of those neolithic metals for me.

I would think that could come from regional social networking... If we could build local groups of paleo-minded people, cooperatives would be a logical extension. Primal Toad seems like he wants to do a lot of this community building as well. It would be good to develop a community-wide, coordinated effort though.

Just read your blog for the first time. Keep this up and I will become a regular. Do you really want that? In addition to what you say about sterile food, there is also those "separators" at the supermarket. You know those "thingies" you put on the counter, so that your items don't touch those of the customer in front/back of you.

I have a rambling, incoherent blog that can of be no use to any community, (in fact I squirm when I see more than 15 people have lost their way and landed on my site).

But here is the skeleton of an idea, it's needs some flesh for sure. I have been thinking that it would be cool if we could have "Paleo Workshops". Like learning opportunities so that we can up our Paleo Skills.

Like: Harvesting Wild Edibles in Washington State. Hunting and butchering game in Colorado. Growing Your Own Vegetable Garden Anywhere, on some hipster's rooftop in NYC. Cooking Old Timey Recipes in some granny's kitchen.

Taught, attended and hosted by members of this group.

My husband could use someone to help haul out an Elk this fall. Any takers? You'd learn a lot about guts and poop.

I don't think I ever saw this one so I'm glad someone bumped it. I miss Moe :( He's gone to the dark side now but dang that boy added so much to this board (most of it really good except when he was occasionally being an a-hole.)

I am working on this. It feels important to me to be of service to others still looking for their answers with regard to their weight, their health, and their food. I am so grateful to have found mine and love to have the opportunity to help others along their own paths.

To that end, I have a small online group of paleo newbs I work with. They drive me nuts but the few who are doing well are doing REALLY well and it makes me so happy I want to cry. I try to participate in the local Meet-ups when I can. Usually a few newbies there to encourage. I've started doing some one-on-one "counseling" (encouragement and information sessions) but I have severely limited resources so this is a tough one to keep up with. Otherwise simply leading by example is a powerful way to be of service. Just on FB alone my "friends" have come to know my thoughts on food and health and have approached me for advise and information which always makes me feel good. To know my daily ramblings can have a positive impact on others or at least get them thinking about their food and the impact it has on their health and their lives is really powerful.

Become the change you seek in the world in your own sphere of influence. Once you do you will transform yourself and become a model to those who look to you........and real change can be born from the seed you sowed.

Learn to cook, teach somebody how to cook and you are half way to better health. Cook and you don't have to worry about eating crap in restaurants or having to buy those BS jimmy moore endorsed snakebars to eat. Pick a country and learn what they eat. Learn to cook French, Spainish, Turkish, Polish and you will see that what they have been eating is really good. Switch out any diary ( I don't have any problems with honest real cheese , so Im good with it) and bread and you are gold. Paleo should not be a dogma or a religion but a ground floor to good health. Paleo cops go away.

My current project is related to my recent question, and is directly related to clearing up newbie confusion defining Paleo - as influenced by new posters (and myself) on Paleo Hacks.

I plan on taking my existing site and having a little "paleo" section, that will generally suggest specific paleo authors or dogmas based on that person's specific needs...

I find the variation and lack of "hard fast rules" in our little circle to be the thing that confuses most newbs, and I'd like to build a resource that not only outlines the pros and cons of each (ZC vs. VLC vs. PHD vs. whatev') but also points someone in the right direction to something they will succeed and stick with.

I have no idea when I will be through though. I just got done with probably 3-6 pages of explaining "Classic" Paleo and "Primal", now it's on to the Paleo 2.0 and 3.0 spheres.

You think that I am Jimmy Moore so I could appear on the show, maybe a "Who is the Real Jimmy Moore?" feature.

Supermarket demos with bacon slathered in coconut butter and steak dripping with butter might work a little better IMHO.

I like the bus idea.

We could also demonstrate against PETA when they demonstrate against eating meat.

I already have a blog, so I checked that box off.
