Binge eating and Paleo

Answered on August 19, 2014

I use to binge eat. I went to O.A for years which did help but it wasn't until I went Paleo that I stopped. I am now thinking it was an addiction to gluten all these years.

Anyone else found the same? By the way I don't binge on Paleo food except nuts so I have cut them, not sure why that is.

Same here re binging. As soon as I quit grains, away went any cravings, including for alcohol...

PS I don't buy nuts either though, but I don't feel like I would binge on them, but perhaps I could easily over eat them! :P

I've experienced the same issue with nuts. They're so freaking addictive! What works better with me is to add them as a part of a meal. If its a salad, maybe some of them mixed in it. Or if it is yoghurt or cream, another spoonful of them. That way the signal I get is different. But If I'm left open with a full packet of them... danger!

Many people binge on nuts. Once you start, it is hard to stop. I remember reading here on Paleohacks some research explaining why people binge on nuts. Apparently, nuts have some kind of substance that makes people keep eating them. However, I found that if I ate nuts every single day, my cravings have diminished greatly with time.

Gluten or sugar for me. After months of 100% paleo, I ate a few of my kids jelly beans at easter. I meant to eat 3 or 4. It was like a monster took over and I scarfed an entire bag. Had to go buy them another bag....

for me binging has little to do with being hungry and more about feeling totally out of control. i have been nearly 100% paleo for 2 years eating mostly low carb and the binging seem to be miraculously cured, so i started adding carbs. within 2 weeks i had a major binge on white rice and butter. YMMV.

I still binged when I went paleo, but it reduced dramatically. After over a year on paleo, I'm happy to report my BED/bulimia is almost non-existent :) I was also diagnosed with Celiac's disease just before I went paleo and so I think maybe because I had malnutrition it was one of the causes of my binge eating.

Great getting the answers. I too have celiac and wonder if my body was starved of nutrients hence the binging? Guess the answer doesn't matter too much but it has stopped.

Wow how interesting. I guess we have to identify with our trigger foods and avoid them at all costs. If I eat once piece of bread that is it for me, its like a freight train and no stopping it.

binge eating on what? lack of getting proper nutrients and saturated fat, combined with eating psycho stimulating preservatives and chemicals (aka chemical shitstorm foods) and poor gut health could certainly cause one to not feel satiated and always for desire for food. good job in getting it together for your self and your life...one day at a time :)

I love salmon also. I guess for me though a binge is when i can't stop and just want to consume everything in sight, and never the 'good' stuff always rubbish.

I am thrilled for you, really thrilled - I bet the protein you're consuming is keeping you full! :) For me, yeah, I binge a little bit... On SALMON! Ha Ha. I can literally wolf down 8 pounds of salmon in a sitting, if not more. Whoops!
