Relief of Dry, Scaly Feet and Peeling, Dead Skin upon Adding Starch to Diet?

I've experimented with adding starch (yams and sweet potatoes) to my otherwise LC diet. One surprising benefit of this was that my feet (normally dry, peeling, scaly and fungal with whitened and brittle toenails) became moist and less dry, producing less dead skin.

Did anyone experience this? My safe starch experiment lasted about a month. And in that span, I noticed significant restoration of moisture to my colon (which was the primary objective of the experiment). But this surprising added benefit makes me think whether dry, peeling, and dead skin (especially feet) might be one of the sideeffects of a VLC diet?

I stopped the experiment and went back to a LC diet (50-70g net carbs) and the dry feet promptly returned. This could just be a coincidence, but I wanna know if anyone else has experienced something similiar?

Edit 6:30pm: I'm back on a low-carb diet for now but experimenting with less starchy vegetables like parsnips to control BG. Upon restarting LC/VLC, dry and scaly feet returned as did constipation from lack of colon moisture. Currenlty taking kelp/iodine (and selenium, too) to see if these symptoms are related to hypothyroidism.

I agree, Todd, that deficiencies are a likely suspect here.

I'm not completely sure what you are asking. Dry skin is a symptom of hypothyroid, and iodine deficiency can cause hypothyroidism, but there are also claims that iodine is needed for proper skin function independent of the thyroid. Unbiased information is seriously lacking. My thyroid levels were and are normal. In fact, I was slightly hypo before going ZC, and it has since corrected itself.

What is AS and BG? I do find on this site a lot of abbreviations which mean nothing to me this early in the morning (and usually, later in the day too.)

U mean iodine deficiency related to your thyroid or just iodine deficiency?

He at least mentions fungal issues. I think this was one of the primary problems Paul had with VLC that resolved with starch.

What is AS? I had to abandon the experiment since my BG was skyrocketing too high. And it's very hard to exercise self-control with yams and sweet potatoes. Now, I'm experimenting with parsnips. Doesn't quite do it: my feet and colon are dry. May have to increase quantity.

Yes, that's what prompted me to experiment with yams and sweet potatoes. However, do the Jaminets specificaly mention dry and dead skin? I don't remember reading about that aspect of the VLC side effects.

I've never had that specific problem, or been able to correlate dry skin with VLC, but I was recently suffering from dry hands and it resolved when I started taking iodine. I'm not sure if it is a just coincidence or not, but dry skin is supposedly a symptom of iodine deficiency, so it's plausible.

After a few weeks VLC, I promptly developed elbows that belonged on a member of the Crocodylidae family.

I had very dry, wrinkled skin on my hands which has improved since adding starchy vegetables and tubers back into my diet. It may have something to do with mucus-deficiency symptoms of VLC diets, see here:

I noticed this too. Unfortunately, the starch aggravated my AS too much and I had to drop it. Interestingly my skin has continued to improve. Not sure if that's because of C or D supplementation or just the nicer weather here!

I never had an issue with dry, itchy, skin or flak scalp. One year of VLC / LC and all of them were an issue. After a while of adding starch back in, I have noticed improvements in all the above areas.

I think many people end up having vitamin and mineral deficiencies on this diet, due to the lack of consumption of organ meats, and what I think is general avoidance of supplements. I haven't started the diet, but have been reading a lot of their blog, and I think the PHD is very sound and deserves a strong look.
