How can I find a good functional medicine doctor?

Does anyone happen to know how I can find a good functional medicine doctor or naturopathic doctor in my area? Are there any good online directories that you know of for this? (Preferably one that will help me avoid quacks!)

The listings on both these sites are 99% non-MDs or NDs. In fact, many are chiropractors who are taught a faulty theory of disease as the basis of their training. If I were listing myself on either of these sites, my first instinct would be to tell someone to visit me, not to make a referral. Dr. Soszka's and Kirsten's advice would be my primary resource.

@Phriend did you ever find a doctor? I'm also in Michigan and looking for one right now.

Well, there are several places to look:

  1. The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (www.naturopathic.org)
  2. The Institute of Functional Medicine (www.functionalmedicine.org)
  3. Functional Medicine University (www.functionalmedicinedoctors.com)

More importantly where are you located? I might know someone.

Hope that helps,

Shawn Soszka ND, LAc.

I actually struggled a lot vetting out good local sources of various paleo ish things. But then I whimsically joined my local WAPF email list and I get local recommendations for everything I could care for. :) No idea if I just lucked out or if they're all so organized.

Two other places that you might consider are:

Paleo Physicians Network (paleophysiciansnetwork.com)

Primal Docs (primaldocs.com)

The listings aren't solely functional medicine doctors, but they will be more familiar with the paleo lifestyle and hopefully be able to in the least serve as referrals for good local practitioners.
