Endurance athlete feeling low blood sugar after 2 days!

Hi all,

Just started using the paleo diet in the last couple of days and have to say i'm struggling already.

  • First day felt a bit light headed in the middle of the afternoon.
  • Yesterday felt pretty heavy headed in the afternoon around 2-3 (after eating meat and veg at around 1).
  • Today I feel just as bad, I'm pretty sure I'm exhibiting classic low blood sugar, light headed, a bit dizzy, feeling tired and cheeks flushing.

I'm an endurance athlete for many years, orginally a rower doing lots of endurance training and now to flat water kayaking which has similar demands. I train every day and can't afford to have 2 weeks feeling tired, sleepy, weak etc while I adapt.

Does everyone else go through this? I have to say my diet was pretty shocking for an athlete before, lots of grains and sugary biscuits/chocolates.

I would like to know if it's possible to gradually implement paleo, for example, having just one meal of grain/starchy carbs and gradually cut it out?

So far I have been eating like 4 x bananas 2 hours before training to get some carbs in the system before training (and I know they aren't really part of the diet).

Sweet potato, yams are good. Better yet read Sisson's Primal Blueprint and consider that you are overdoing the athletic portion of your life.
