What digestive problems (if any) have you had when switching to a Paleo diet and what worked to improve the situation?

I???ve been Paleo now for about a month following a Mark Sisson???s type Blueprint diet with probably a bit more dairy then he advocates. What I???ve found is that I???ve had a few grumbly belly aches and some constipation. I don???t have any major allergies or food intolerances and haven't had any problems with dairy in the past. I???ve eliminated sugar, grains and legumes, substituting them with meat, nuts, seeds, greens, cutting back on fruit and eating more full fat cheese and yoghurt. I was wondering whether anyone else has gone through similar issues when transitioning to Paleo.

Great advice. I've added a bit of charb (some fruit, s/potatoes are great too) back in and it definitely helps.

eddieosh,

A lot of us have had the same problem starting out on paleo. I feel a lot better after adding back a small amount of starch to my diet. I will eat a banana or half a sweet potato once a day.

Here is some info you should check out:

I second cutting back on the nuts and seeds- at least for a time.

I started Paleo 4 months ago and immediately developed serious GI distress (cramping, gas, constipation, diarrhea at times). I didn't have any of these problems before, and went paleo to heal hormonal imbalances. Doing the GAPS diet for a time has done wonders and I have no problem digesting any paleo foods now. I think it is a mixture of the GAPS (lots of bone broths- elimination of a lot of food for about two weeks).

Also, it must also be attributed to time- I think it takes the body time to adjust to the new ratio of fat:protein:carbs.

My 2 cents: cut back on the nuts, seeds, dairy, drink lots of water get lots of good fats. Don't expect miracles in only a month of eating healthy, we have screwed up our bodies over decades of abuse so I can take many months even years to heals, depends on the individual.

I had terrible, painful IBS, went LC-VLC (over 5 years ago now) and never had it since, never constipated, always regular. If I happen to eat a lot of nuts & seeds my stomach complains, same with cheese (even though i am not lactose intolerant). Listen to your body it will definitely yell you what it wants and what it does not like, we humans tend to ignore these signals as some can be very subtle.

When I started, I ate eggs and lots of veggies. I had constipation. Gelatin and apple cider vinegar worked, though deep breathing seemed to work quite well too.
When I did ZC, I had diarrhea. Eating more fiber again worked.

It may be important to mention that I've had IBS my whole life, but wasn't aware of it. I was sometimes constipated for 10 days, but I thought that was normal.
