I stumbled onto paleo simply because I was running out of options to increase my health and one of the health issues I was having was IBS (7+ years). I was having a BM probably 4-7 times a day. After a 3 day fast and switching to paleo my IBS went away immediately and I was having a regular to large BM 1 time a day, everyday on schedule after breakfast. After being on Paleo since September 2010 I feel great, however, I was and currently am dealing with cortisol and thyroid issues from the damage I did prior to the paleo lifestyle. I subsequently gained some additional bodyfat because of it, while on paleo. With the recommendation of many paleo folks and my doctor (who is paleoish) I have increased my carb intake (paleo carbs of course) and reduced my workouts to 3 days a week. I have seen some bodyfat loss over the past couple weeks however it seems that on occasion (not everyday) I am "going" twice a day (once in the morning and once in the late afternoon).
So my question - Is this a sign of my metabolism increasing....i.e. thyroid activity and less cortisol production??? I always have the fear of my IBS coming back, so I am trying to find some other reason for the extra BM.

What is the consistancy of your fecal matter? 1-2 times a day is normal as far as I am concerned, but increased BM is not a sign of faster metabolism. Metabolisim helps to burn excess fat, grow hair, or have high reflexes, but not BM's. Exercising causes certain gastric fluids to help properly digest foods. The proper digestion results in frequent BM's. However, tainted foods can also result in undesired and/or frequent BM's. The higher the metabolism, the less waste you have, because the body is actually using more of the food that is being digested. Also, exercising helps to boost the metabolism function.

I had IBS for as long as I could remember with an average of going 2-3 times a day. Since starting Paleo I too am a SUPER POOPER.
ISNT IT AMAZING????
I can now travel and go on trips without being afraid like someone who's incontinent!
I have no idea if it's about metabolism, but I figured it was because I was digesting my food better and not trying to flush everything as fast as possible.
