Why am I having bowel problems

Commented on January 09, 2014

I'm new to paleo and have been experiencing loose stools and gas. For breakfast I eat liquid egg whites, a Banana, an apple, blueberries, and pecans. For lunch I'll have grilled chicken, asparagus, broccoli, pecans. For Dinner, more grilled chicken, carrots, broccoli, and pecans. Am I doing something wrong?

"I eat liquid egg whites"...i'd hazard a guess he's buying liquid egg whites. i've seen it for sale in cartons next to the milk (sounds plain wrong to me).

i'm with you, if you are gonna pick only part of the egg, go with the yolk

Maybe less fiber. Also, eat the whe egg -- not just whites. Chicken is fine, but eat more varies. Get your carbs from plants with more glucose than fructose (potatoes, leafy greens, vegetables, etc. )

what's wrong with that? the majority of your calories should be meat calories.

Without all that I feel like all of my calories would come from meat.

No I came from eating very little fiber. I mainly ate cheeseburgers, fries, sausage biscuits, cokes, etc.

I would ditch the "liquid egg whites". Opt for whole eggs -- I have 3 scrambled or poached cooked with some veggies in ghee. Throw in an avocado and maybe remove some of the fruit for now, maybe keep the blueberries as a snack late if you're hungry.

For lunch, if you're having chicken make sure you add some EVOO for some healthy fat. You may want to also swap in other things like mackerel, wild salmon or herring here.

For dinner, swap chicken with something like beef, or even better, beef liver cooked with onions, garlic and a little balsamic if you fancy it. Include some carbs from starches like sweet potatoes, yams etc, which should help.

If you're newly introducing a lot of veggies and nuts to your diet, that can cause gas and diarrhea big time. Esp broccoli. I would introduce veggies slowly to figure out what upsets your stomach. You could add some brown rice to help bulk up your stool. Also, you could try a probiotic once a day, that helps with gas, bloat, and diarrhea. This should lessen over time as your body gets use to your new diet. But if you go all in all at once, your body is going to take some time to adjust.

<SPAM>

Bowel problems, incontinence is the inability to control bowel movements. It's a common problem, especially among older adults. The most common cause of bowel incontinence is damage to the muscles.

Did you used to eat potatoes, rice etc? If so - perhaps adding them back will help you? Paleo does NOT have to be very low carb. VLC doesn't suit everyone by any means.

Central theme = pecans. Are you hooked? I used to do that with Almonds, shove them in whenever I could, gave that up. How about some beef or salmon? Too much chicken, it isn't the wonder food that conventional wisdom would have you believe. I try to limit it to once a week if possible.

Your diet sounds overly restrictive and repetitive. You need to throw in more variety.

It also looks like you're getting far, far too little fat while getting too much omega 6 PUFA's...

Lastly, you can just about stop the loose stools in their tracks with rice, potatoes, and some yogurt or kefir.

On a side note: The whites can irritate your bowels, especially when raw. The yolk is the best part of the egg. The only part of the egg you should be eating raw is the yolk and personally, I eat mostly yolk whether cooked or not. You're discarding the wrong part of the egg! All the good stuff is in the yolk.

Not sure if this would help but seems like you could use some more fat. Try cooking all those veggies/chicken in coconut oil...change the egg whites to whole eggs...maybe this will help?

Our bodies do not like drastic changes. If eating that way is new, you're going to have some digestive upset. I'm not a fan of simply "powering through the pain", so I'd recommend you eat some non-paleo junk and ease into a whole-food diet like paleo. Eat some rice.
