Deconstruction certainly sells the books. I don't think the criticisms are invalid, but they don't take you very far from the well-herded flock.

Maybe it "debunks" the mainstream cookie-cutter Paleo with all its Grok-ing. Few here would argue that none can benefit from dairy, or that carbs from "safe-starches" like white rice, sweet potatoes etc.. are not beneficial.

Crazy how popular non-fiction tries to make folks feel better about their cruddy diets...

While I was reading about the Paleo diet, I was also reading a few books by Dr. Mark Hyman. He focuses a lot on balancing hormones and reducing inflammation through diet. I found that Paleo met a lot of his criteria. ON average, the American diet is nutrient deficient. Paleo focuses on providing our body with vitamins, minerals and fats that cells need to made our body healthier! Modern medicine would rather give you a pill than say "oh just take some B12." It's twisted... My brother made the joke that he hates how it is called "Paleo" because he feels like some swanky hipster from Manhattan or something.... it's just a good way to eat... that isn't a fad, it should last a lifetime.

What seems to bother Zuk at the core is that Paleo is so messy and fragmented. She seems eager to tidy things up. Unfortunately nagging has never motivated me. Her points are taken to heart, but I've known that Paleo lifestyle is not Atkins dieting for quite a while. She doesn't bring anything useful to a discussion of whether to eat more or less shellfish or muscle meat.
