I had IBS for 10 years. While the causes can be different for everyone (since it's a syndrome), in general, it's gluten/carb intolerance and the SIBO effect (overgrowth of bacteria in the gut because of imbalance because of gluten/carbs).

IBS went away with Paleo/SCD for me (Paleo + home-made goat kefir), but I don't feel as good on Jaminet's protocol at around 150 gr of net carbs on average per day. I need to be instead between 50 and 100 gr of net carbs to be symptom-free. In fact, I felt my best when I was ketogenic (30-50 gr of net carbs per day), but 50-100 was also manageable. More than that, and I had to be near a toilet, even if I was still Paleo (although obviously not as bad as before).

I couldn't agree more Eugina. I suffered more from heartburn than IBS symptoms but found relief at the same overall carb levels. My new focus is on difficult-to-digest carbs which I discuss in an article on SIBO diets that includes a review of the paleo diet for gut issues. http://digestivehealthinstitute.org/2012/08/17/sibo-diet-and-digestive-health/.
