I'll be going on a 10 day trip to Cancun, Mexico over New Years. I'm currently pretty strict, although my food quality is poor.
Does anyone have any tips, suggestions, comments, or experience traveling and eating in mexico?
All I've heard is don't drink the water, and corn tortillas are okay in moderation

I would build myself a hacienda of ceviche and eat my way out, personally.
That and fresh, well washed veggies, plus as much guacamole as I could stand.

I live in Playa del Carmen, next to Cancun and am on the strict side of Paleo - more like paleo upgraded. Down the Maya Riviera (the stretch from Cancun down the coast) a lot of the food brands available in supermarkets and speciality stores (there are quite a few organic stores) are the same.

I thought it was actually easier to eat out there than it is here. Marlin (oh what I'd do for a marlin taco right now), prawns, fish rolled in coconut and fried, lots of beef and pork. Amazing varieties of salsa and guac. Lots of fresh fruit and fresh juice. No worries, just stick to bottled water, maybe avoid ice cubes of unknown source, and avoid raw veggies that don't get peeled or aren't washed by you.
Drink beer. It's safer than the water. I recommend also mango and other fruits and there is a ton of fish at any restaurant. I really liked getting meat there with some guacamole. Also...if you can find Mom and Pop's off the beaten path the food is better, cheaper and more homemade. I hate to travel but this is one of the few places I've been.
Stay away from Tequini Happy Hour. Me drank too much.
I just went to Mexico in December. I usually gain weight on vacation, but eating meat, lot of vegetables, and guacamole I actually didn't gain any weight.
I didn't snack on any chips, ice cream, desserts, and limited my alcohol intake.
You will find lots of good seafood, chicken, pork and chewy beef. Fruit is fabulous-sweet and fresh, so enjoy it while you can. They are not big on salads and lots of vegetables but you can find them if you try. Avocados are yummy, jicama and cucumbers are refreshing.
Don't eat too many tortillas and tortilla chips- they sort of sneak up on you. Mexican beer seems really light and it is cheaper than other drinks.

I travel to the Yucatan almost every year and have not had any problem with getting my fill of the amazing food. I eat ceviche everyday and find plenty of grilled meats and fish that are terrific. You wont find many veggies but the fruit is fantastic. I typically have a place were I cook a bit and make tons of guacamole with plantain chips and fresh pineapple salsa.Buen probecho!
