Feeling "hungover" with flu-like symptoms - Not "low carb flu"

I have been toying with the idea of adopting a paleo style diet so I have been lurking here for a week or so.

My normal diet consists of meat, veggies, fruit, yogurt, oats, and popcorn. Literally, the only two grains that I eat and can reasonably tolerate.

I have noticed that the past two times that I have eatten like complete crap ( i.e. kiddie cereal, pizza, bread, lasagna, cookies) that the next day my entire tongue feels like it has been burned ( its not physically burning, but its like how your tongue feels after it has been burned) I will be EXTREMELY tired, mucus in my throat and moderately sore, runny nose.. ect. I just feel like crap. Like I am hungover. I also cannot run for a couple days after, like my leg muscles literally cramp and seize up like small charlie horses. I don't get GI distress at all.

My question is since I can tolerate oatmeal and popcorn and its only "junk foods" in overindulgence that cause this, could I have a food intolerance/allergy if so what does it sound like? Or could it just be that I eat healthy 95% of the time and that my body just cannot handle the copious amounts of processed food I am ingesting on an irregular basis.

I realize that this site is possibly a very biased place to ask this question but figured I would anyway.

You are probably right because honestly I can eat my weight in oats and popcorn and never suffer any adverse reaction like this. Very possible it was just "too much" severly over processed/sweetened foods. I thought perhaps it was the bread/cookies mostly because I very rarely eat bread.. I just never want it.

The sauce for the lasagna I did make in a teflon coated pot :/ Interesting because I never would have put the two together. Last time I ate like this I don't recall if I cooked anything or not hmm

I was thinking maybe it could be just all the crap in the pizza and cookies for sure as these were ordered out and packaged items. I just don't eat that way on any sort of regular basis. As far as the dairy, I never have problems with it. I can eat cheese, drink milk and other dairy products without any adverse reaction... idk it's strange. I am trying to not adopt any eating protocol that is all the way left or all the way right, if I have too many 'rules' I deviate far more than if I just try to eat food that has minimal or no processing.

Maybe I'm completely wrong in this one, but are you cooking your meals with Teflon pans (modern anti-stick coating)? It can cause symptoms which are flu-like. I used to have it every once in a while, it feels like your getting sick, but you will recover in a day or 2 without trouble, but still if feels strange. DuPont, the manufacturer, admits the symptons: http://www2.dupont.com/Teflon/en_US/products/safety/key_questions.html#q1 Some more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teflon#Safety

Since then I went cooking with cast iron & stainless steel, and I haven't had the symptoms yet.

The mucous and runny nose makes me lean towards at least dairy.

The sluggishness and misery, I'd probably put towards refined wheat and sugar.

Burned tongue, I'm not sure about. My best guess might be the glutamates (sp?)--MSG type foods. Could also be high salt and/or preservatives/artificial stuff.

Might be a warning sign that pizza, bread, lasagna, cookies and cereal aren't for you :)

But if you're wondering, you can do a test by only trying one naughty food at a time, so you can determine which exceptions to the paleo lifestyle work for you and don't work for you.

Oats and popcorn are grains, but they are far less processed than cereals or pastas are. I'm guessing you might be reacting to the refined flours and sugars. I can eat dairy without any problems, but if I eat grains (even just a piece of bread or two) I'll wake up dehydrated (with a similar tongue feeling) and be able to feel the food in my gut for the rest of the day.
