Diet of ONLY grass fed tallow, beef, spinach and lettuce?

Answered on August 19, 2014

What do you think of a diet consisting of ONLY the following 4 foods:

  1. grass fed tallow
  2. grass fed beef
  3. organic spinach
  4. organic lettuce

If someone ate these and only these foods, how do you think it would go? - in the short term? - in the long term?

would this be enough nutrients? would this be healthy?

Jamie, grass fed beef is actually a good source of selenium, see: http://www.tallgrassprairie.com/meateggsetc

Nursling - since you made a Star Trek reference, I've always thought we could just beam nutrients directly into our systems using transporter technology. Couple that with gravimetric control and we could then evolve into just giant floating brains. No need for a body.

I think beef liver has some C and with no grains in the diet I don't think you need much. There's a guy named Lex Rooker on a raw paleo forum that eats nothing but beef and beef offal and water. He's done so for years with no signs of scurvy.

This genre of questions should be closed as repetitive. The only thing that changes is that the names and number of foods.

No, add bacon, mayo and some tomatoes...perfect match for the lettuce. Just thinking about BLT makes me hungry.

Lettuce to ghee isn't a big jump in nutritional worth, in my book.

Jayjay, not if you drink evian instead of tap water (I beleive bone broth and liver has some, and spinach mag isnt that un-bioavailable, the magnesium is essentially from the chlorophyll, which is why its in all dark leafies - rocket, chard, whatever. If you eat a pile o' that kind stuff every day youll get enough IMO, but its hard to eat that much leafy greens all the time). Agreed though, that you get your levels well up to proper levels by eating nuts though. Nuts are mineral dense as. Good food. Good source of inositol too (ooo, the dreaded phytic acid!)

Id go for rocket instead of lettuce (has vit k), but no that still wont be enough. You need more iodine, more calcium and magenisum, vitamin e, vitamin c. Theres rare minerals like selenium, that isnt in beef (I beleiv its in lamb). If beef included liver and broth that would help alot. But generally speaking its better to eat as much variety as you can.

The calcium and magnesium in spinach is poorly bioavailable, and lettuce and beef doesn't have very much of either. I'd be aware of those two nutrients.

You would not get enough variety of nutrients and vitamins. Eating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables is healthier. Add in some broccoli, kale, tomatoes and peppers and now we are talking about a diet.

Right off the top where are you going to get Vitamin C? Vitamin A and D? Omega 3's?

Please don't say supplements.

I think you would be healthier than 90% of the population. One suggestion: drop the lettuce, add bacon :).

Four very healthy foods. Add in a half-dozen more equally healthy ones and you'll be where you want to be. I may be wrong, and your four foods may be perfect, but eating a variety of healthy foods by definition gives you a larger range of nutrients while reducing the probability of overloading on any one.

If you're hypothyroid you won't want the spinach. If the BEEF category includes liver and kidney you won't need spinach. The liver will cover the iron, copper need and the kidneys will take care of selenium. Substitute some form of seafood for omega 3 and iodine instead of spinach.

Variety is importsnt. You need more sources of potassium, iodine, selenium, omega 3, vitamin k2, vitamin e, etc. Also lettuce is a worthless food. Eat some ghee
