Concerned about hair shedding from weight loss?

Ok, so every time I have lost weight no matter what diet i was on or how i did it, I always lost a lot of hair, not in clumps or anything but it would just shed for about a year and i generally have thick hair but because of losing weight in the past it looks very thin on top. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening while eating paleo this time around? I read that sometimes hair loss can be caused from losing weight too fast and in return it shocks your body, but i'm not sure. If anyone knows or has had this happen to them, what could I do to avoid this from happening?

Hair loss is a thyroid issue, probably hypothyroidism (under-active) or hashimoto's (an autoimmune disease which causes hypothyroidism).

My n=1 experience:

Switched to paleo lifestyle, lost 30# in 4 months. About two months in we added diatomaceous earth as a daily supplement. My hair has started to regrow, it is not nearly as thin on top as it was before embracing the paleo lifestyle. YMMV.

The same thing happened to me more than three times. I never could figure out why I was loosing so much hair till I have read about it in some book/article/blog or some other source. I remember thinking - wow! Now I know why my hair was falling out! But I never wrote it down and forgot why.

All I could remember that it was EITHER some nutrient deficiency due to malabsorption OR some hormonal imbalance OR thyroids OR something inflammatory and connected to blood sugar. I know, I am not very helpful. Sorry.

Anyway, back in my SAD days 5,000 of biotin stopped it. Now a VERY VERY VERY low carb diet (less then 20 grams per day) works for my hair.

But I would definitely try diatomaceous earth like GK suggested (I never heard about it before).
