Well they seem to go back and forth, and then the discussion peters off.

Actually, the increase in volume in fast twitch muscle fibre due to hypertrophy results in an overall lower mitochondrial density.

Anaerobic (heavy lifting) will increase them quite well. More muscle = more mitochondia.

The total number of mitochondria in a cell is a function of mitochondrial fission, fusion and mitophagy (mitochondrial autophagy).

Mitochondria are found predominantly in slow twitch muscle fibres, the ones associated with endurance (anaerobic, lipid oxidizing) activity, however they can be stimulated to undergo fission/biogenesis/density increase by anaerobic challenge, anaerobic plus high intensity training, low carb diet and BCAA supplementation.

It's a very important area particularly in the aged who lose mitochondria, or whose mitochondria become damaged.

In the film The Bourne Legacy the protagonist is taking meds to enhance his mitochondrial function.

Short answer, yes, aerobic exercise will increase mitochondrial number.

yeahhhhh! by improving the muscle which are mithocondria made from, this could increase the amount of mithocondria and ATP energy in the cellular respiratory system
