Diatomaceous Earth: Ever heard of it? Ever used it?

Answered on February 20, 2015
Created October 29, 2010 at 2:28 PM

A family member referred me to the following article:

http://www.examiner.com/nutrition-in-philadelphia/detoxification-what-does-it-involve-and-is-it-for-you

The author mentioned diatomaceous earth; I clicked on the link for DE ( http://thedetoxspecialist.com/blog/detox/food-grade-diatomaceous-earth-and-its-health-advantages ) which led me to the store ( http://www.morethanalive.com/Diatomaceous-Earth-Food-Grade-Powder ) where I spent some time reading the comment section.

Apparently, people regard DE as some sort of miracle cure. As far as I can tell, it's basically fossilized trace minerals, but I'm pretty skeptical...any ideas? Has anyone used this? Or even heard of it? Do you think it could be a beneficial supplement for paleo?

There is a HUGE difference between DE and sand. Sandpaper - rough and made from sand. DE is soft and fine, like talcum powder. I cannot see any way that DE could harm or abrade the intestinal tract. Also, it kills insects by dehydration, not laceration!

I agree, Eva. There is a lot unknown, still. I haven't been able to find any side effects, or reports of people feeling any sort of ill effects, even after years of use (food grade, not bug killing grade). I might just give it a try and see what happens!

the particles are too small to have an effect on your intestines. It only works on insects/small animals. It is completely harmless (assuming food grade) to larger animals like humans and livestock. It has been used as an organic wormer for livestock for years.

I have no problems thinking DE 'might' be good for removing intestinal parasites. In fact, when I worked at Petco, it consistantly got excellent reviews for killing fleas. I could see logically that it might work on intestines. If so, the questoin becomes, how many people have parasites, what kind of dosing is required, what are side effects/dangers, and how effective is it. There is much left unanswered as yet.

The only diff with food grade is they are (supposedly) making sure that the stuff has no more than the allowed level of toxins in it. But all DE is abbrasive fossilized diatoms. That does not change between food grade and not food grade. Could be that healhty intestines can handle it though.

Food grade diatomaceous earth works in removing hookworms, a common parasitic infestation in the digestive tract. Although hookworms are benign compared to some other nasty parasites, they still increase risk of deficiencies because they are blood suckers. I'm speaking from experience, I put some of the food grade diatomaceous earth in water and drank it. It's safe and I didn't suffer, the worms were gone.

Food grade DE will still be abrasive to your instestinal tract. DE kills via scratching the exteriors of soft skinned critters like insect larvae. It's a big favorite for exterior garden insect control because rain will not easily destroy it. It is not actually poisonous in itself but it is definitely bad for soft flesh. I would not ingest it personally. It's just fossil shell material made mostly of silica. I am laughing at one website that said silica is the most important trace mineral to man! Yup, eating sand is just sooooo healthy! ;-) Just make sure you don't eat melted silica, which would be glass..

Hi, I just wanted to dispel the notion which some people have that DE kills insects by cutting up the exoskeleton and therefore there is a danger of being cut internally by ingesting it.

DE is silica with extensive surface area for its mass, and internal porosity. Like all inert dusts, DE kills insects and parasites by desiccation. Due to its highly porous nature, DE is one of the most effective of all natural inert dusts. It absorbs waxy fats and oils (lipids) from the epicuticle (skin) of insects and other invertebrate pests. Once the waxy, oily coating is removed, the insect cannot retain water and dies due to dehydration. Partial water loss makes them thirsty, but most insects die when about 60 percent of their water is lost.

I have used it sucessfully to get rid of a bedbug infestation that a pest control company couldn't get rid of in over six visits! Don't want to say what company, but it rhymes with Borkin.

Diatomaceous earth basically cuts into the bugs as they walk over it, they dehydrate and die. You have to be careful not to breath it in or get in your eyes. Not sure I would want to swallow it either.

Ive been using DE for about 2 months now. Ive suffered with IBS for nearly 30 years (im 46 now) and ive tried everything the doctor ever threw at me, but with no relief. I started noticing a difference within a couple of days of taking DE and now im completely clear of any symptom of IBS, its an utter joy!

Also, i had started suffering from terrible pre menopausal night sweats, about 5 a night, every night. They were so bad id have to change my pjays due to them being soaked with sweat. Id been having these for about 18 months. Now this is no exageration - i took my first dose of DE at about 11am on the first morning - a teaspoon in water, and then another in the evening, that night i didnt have 1 hot sweat, and in the last 2 months of being on DE ive had 2 in total.

The other effects its had on me are my nails are a lot stronger, i noticed this after a week, my hair is noticably thicker, i had 2 little fat lumps on the whites of my eyes which have almost gone, my skin looks lovely too and my gums and teeth feel and look healthy!

I added kefir to my diet about a week ago and that, combined with the DE seem to have made my energy levels soar and i have a calm/happy feeling about me all of the time.

I take 2 heaped tablespoons in my nutribullet every morning. I make it with half a banana, a few berries (raspberries/blueberries) 1 tablespoon coconut oil, 1 tbs chia seeds, 1 tbs cacao nibs, 2 tbs DE, a pinch of himalayan pink salt and then filled with milk kefir. I make this every day and the weight has fallen off me and my husband - we are middle aged and dont have an ounce of fat on us.

I sprinkle DE on the cat and dog food and brush it through their coats if they get a flea. Ill be trying it as a pest controller once the spring comes, to keep unwanted creepy crawlies out of the house. xx

Ive just started both my parents on DE, im trying to get my mom off blood pressure pills (much to the doctors annoyance), so ill report back when she has her blood pressure tested. xx

I have been taking DE for about 6 months - about 3-5 days a week - so far I have reduced 3 of my blood pressure and heart medications - I have 7 stents in my coronary arteries. I am a retired hospice nurse, am very scientific, and am very careful about monitoring my health etc. I can tell you that my blood pressure is the best it has every been - running about 116/60. I had severe angina and was taking a heavy duty medication for chronic angina called Ranexa. I have been able to cut this from 2000mg a day to 1000mg a day. I also took a long acting nitroglycerin called Isosorbide. i was able to reduce this from 60mg to 45 mg. One thing about DE is that it affects clotting properties so if you take a "blood thinner" (which I do) you have to pay attention. I previously took 81 mg of Aspirin twice a day (plus Plavix, a blood thinner) but have cut the Aspirin to once a day because I was having slight nose bleeds and bruising more easily. I have lots of energy and for the FIRST time in 8 years have been able to reduce my cardiologist visits from every 2 months to 6 months. I am happy to report, ladies and gentlemen, that this is the absolute truth!

I have been taking DE for 3 weeks now with no negative effects. My hair is healthier and my skin is softer, which is very noticeable, since I am 65. I take 1 Tbsp in my morning smoothie and 1Tbsp in my afternoon fruit blend. I have also noticed better energy and and more complete bm's. I intend to keep taking it as my objective is to help lessen some joint pain in my hips

I started taking it about 2 weeks ago now. I timidly started with 1 heaping tsp. in the morning with water - no taste just a little chalky. It seemed fine and opted to take one in the morning and one in the evening and was noticing better bowel movement and better energy. Two weeks later I am now adding a Tbsp to my smoothy in the morning and taking another spoonful at night and notice that my skin is so much softer and I feel good and have had no bad side effects. I intend to take this for probably a couple months at least and then decide weather to continue

Use this on carpets when flea season starts in my yard and cats go in and out. It does not solve problem outside because of rain. I have to result to Sevin which is an insecticide. I also do not put DE in my flower beds because of the praying mantus that hatch. It does kill ants but because they eat termite larve under ground, I end up using DE only inside. It does not cut insects. It dehydrates them. Silica is important for bone and because of advanced osteoporosis, I drink a little in water every day. Use only food grade. Very inexpensive and available on Internet and your animal feed and farm suppliers. So far not available at big box stores in food grade.

I used it for a couple of months, and almost all my joint pain went away, and my skin got wonderfully soft feeling. One caution, the recommended dose of 2 heaping tbs per day gave me an itch in the anus that set me up for a few months of a tiresome little fungal infection that was very hard to get rid of. I don't think the rash thing is typical, fyi; it was just around in the household at the time.

I like the suggestion to let it set in the water for that reason.

I just started taking it about 3-4 wks ago. So far, not a negative side effect, not a one! I was pretty toxic inside (from YEARS of unhealthy/pure junk food and grease eating). I have bad skin because of it-prematurely (at 26 I started getting wrinkles). I know that no visible imrovements should be seen right away, but I believe that afer a few mos. of being on it, things will start to change (someone else had a similar story and it changed her skin). Supposedly that much silica can even get rid of sun damage. We'll see, but overall, everything is great!

To avoid thirst or constipation just put a heaping tbsp. in your 1 gallon water jug and let it settle. You still get the silica which is great for your skin, hair and nails. It settles in about an hour. Just drink the water and not the actual DE that sinks to the bottom. If you don't have a problem with constipation or crazy thirst, just shake gently and drink it all. Use FOOD GRADE only! A 3 lb container will last you 6 months or more.

I have had some mixed in with water before, taste like chalky water..., and I occasionally use it on my dogs as flea treatment or around the house to kill ants. It works by causing cuts in the exoskeleton of insects which leads to them bleeding to death or becoming dehydrated I as best I understand. For nutrition I think that it is touted as a way to kill parasites in your GI tract, but I always thought that if it cuts parasites it is probably cutting me as well... Don't really know for sure but thought I'd share that, Yes there are people out here that have heard of it...
