What book would you recommend for a newly diagnosed diabetic who still believes in conventional wisdom (Low fat, whole grains, etc)?

Edit: websites will work, too.

A goodly amount of Dr. Bernstein's book can be read online here: http://www.diabetes-book.com/readit.shtml

No better time than the present for your friend to start learning new "beliefs." Conventional Wisdom will kill him.

BTW, he gives advice - and solutions - for both Type 1 and Type 2 - diabetics.

The above recommendations, yes. I was diagnosed as Type II after living many years on low-fat, whole grain, lots of fruit, organic everything... thought I was doing right by my body. Turns out it was the cause of my elevated glucose levels. So I found many of the above links and books, went low carb and paleo, and now I am controlling my previously elevated glucose levels without medication, which I believe should be the goal of all Type II's.

I always say that the wake up call from my doctor vis-a-vis a diagnosis as a diabetic actually saved my life. I would have changed my diet if only I had known, but it took the scary diagnosis to make me investigate out of my own box. Wishing you well.

After Dr. Bernstein...or at the same time...go to http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/

Read everything Jenny has to say. Buy her book...Diabetes 101...on Amazon.

Then get Dr. Bernstein's CD's. He has a Type 1 series and Type 2...Listen in the car, workout etc...till you have it memorized. Start listening to his monthly free podcasts..always great info. http://www.askdrbernstein.net/
