Extremely low vitamin D

My vitamin D 25OH is 9.0. reference range 30-100

I am supplementing fermented cod liver oil and get 15-20 minutes of daily sun exposure wearing no shirt and shorts. I also tested positive for ANA. I am thinking something is at play thats causing my deficient vitamin D status. Suggestions?

I have red hair but I am not fair skinned. I have uniquely dark skin for having dark red hair. Lately ( i am 29) i have been getting freckles from the sun, when before I used to never freckle.

I had intended to use Thorne Research - Vitamin D/K2 Liquid But I was reading this site "Marshall protocal" which says that low vit D and autoimmune disease is a state where supplemental vitamin D is bad. I'm going to read more about it, for some reason I do think the + ANA has something to do with whats going on.

Could be genetic. My family has a genetic issue with storing D. I confirmed it on 23andMe (a DNA profiling company - expensive). Talk to your doc about supplementing. My dad gets D shots. Also retest - lab results can be flat out wrong.

Relevant questions -

How many IU are you supplementing weekly, and how long ago did you begin? Vitamin D builds up cumulatively so a long-standing deficiency will take time to alleviate even when megadosing on D.

How long have you been paleo? If you have Celiac, Chrons, IBS, or other problems with leaky gut, it will take time to heal your gut and improve vitamin absorption.

Where do you live and what is your skin complexion? If you are living in North America or Europe, except possibly in the most southern parts of the US, chances are 15-20 min of sun exposure this time of year is doing close to nothing for you. Even less if you are dark-skinned. Most of us struggle to maintain adequate D serum levels from sunlight alone in the northern latitudes during winter--it's even more difficult to come back from a deficiency under those conditions.

Address gut health, continue supplementing through food, and monitor your D status over time. If it ticks up, you're on the right track. If it stubbornly refuses to increase after six months of supplementation and dietary corrections, see a Dr about deeper issues with absorption.

Hang in there and keep doing what you are doing. It takes time to come up. 3-5,000 units/day + sun and retest in 3 months.
